rustproof the underside of my van what to go for???

Postby swbdave » Fri May 03, 2013 9:59 pm

chaps, I am planning to rustproof the underside of my van

its used daily but is basicly rust free, just some wire brushing needed

I have shit-loads of cavity wax so obviously i'll squirt that in all the box sections/cavitys

the underside of my van is mostly the OE electrocoat finish & some stonechip

my options:

hammerite black underseal with added waxoyl-not a fan of undeseal really!!! once it gets a bit old n flakey its a right rust trap

upol raptor loadbed paint which I have used before & I really rate it, its really chip resistant & is suprisingly thick-a very hard tough finish-great sound deadener & easy to apply

dinitrol underbody WAX coating apparantly its very good???

my plan is to clean & coat the underside of my van in a really good coating to seal the underside from the elements

then inject all box sections with cavity wax-fookin loads of it basicly as I have lots

any advice for underbody rust proofing is the main dealeo at the moment though

cheers all

The (not so very) secret is to make sure the job is dry before you coat it as any moisture present will be sealed in by what ever you choose to keep it out with :!: and if there's water behind your lovely new coat of rustproofing it will continue to eat your van and you wont notice till its too late :x :x :x

Hi, Waxoyle dries out and the rust spreads underneath it. I use one part waxoil, one part clean engine oil and one part petrol. This sprays easily into the box sections and cavities of the van , but it never sets. Twelve months later it still has the consistency of vaseline and gives constant on going protection.

Regards Rick

I am with rick, I mix waxoil and used engine oil for all box sections and cavities and anywhere that does not get sprayed from the tyres such as the wheel arches, It never goes off and will congile back together if it is ever chipped or scratched....I like a 1:1 ratio or some times 70% waxoil and 30% used engine oil if you are planning on going to a hot climate  Never use straight waxoil as it can be the worst thing in the world!!!! If you care about the look of the underside of your van because its new or whatever then use clear waxoil and new oil..... 8) Also for arches I use more waxoil and less oil so that it resists being sprayed at 8) And yes only do it when you are sure that it is as dry as a ......

I'm considering owatrol, a hard paint layer (hammerite or so) and topping that off with some bitume product to 'catch' any impact.

i use black bitumen paint 5l for 12 quid from local hardware and spray it on with a shultz gun i put a bit of hosepipe on gun and the other end in the tin and away i go i can spray whole van in 20 mins and i do it every july 12 quid a year works out a pound a month and NEVER needs welding should last forever and if you dont have a compressor aldi and lidl do one for about 70 quid and a gun costs about 15 quid so it is a bargaln that you cannot afford to be without
