Timing on mk5

Got a mk5 smiley 2.5td automatic 85ps lwb which has been having issues with engine diagnostic light, when the light comes on she losses power and goes into safe home mode, was told on here that she proberly needed new cambelt.
I have since fitted new cambelt and tensioner and it was a pretty easy job, all 3 locking pins are spot on but still getting warning light, its driving me absolutely insane to the point of pulling my none existant hair out.
Does anybody have any ideas? could it be timing? if so how do i know how to get it spot on?
or anything else that could cause this......
please can somebody give me some advice.

have just rung my local ford garage and they think it may be the fuel pump either timing out and as its a drive by wire epic pump the timing has to be spot on or needs a new pump.... how would i get timing spot on????

When you switch the engine off, does it shut down straight away or run on for a few seconds?

If it runs on its most likely the egos stop solenoid on the pump causing the light of doom!

van is M-reg 2.5 TD Automatic.
Been having probs with engine warning light, told to put new cambelt on which ive done, new belt and tensioner fitted, all 3 pins locked in perfectly.
Red light still coming on and putting into limp home mode.
Rang ford who said either i need a new fuel pump (epic) drive by wire or timing may be out a tiny bit and it needs to be absolutely bang on or it will put van into LHM.
Has anyone had similar problems and if so any ideas on fault????
How would i adjust timing to get it perfect???????

if you take the cover off and it all pins up it will not be the timing thats putting it in to limp home mode.

You really need to get it plugged in now to get the fault codes (but thats easier said than done because very few machines - including ford IDS - will read them correctly).

When you say its an M reg is it a mk4 or mk5? If its a mk4 I believe you can go down the bosch pump route (ask AndyG for confirmation) but if its a mk5 you have to stick with the epic or put a manual gearbox in.

There is also a technique for getting "blink codes" which can be used to identify the faults on a mk4 (but not mk5) using a paperclip. You would need to ask FRAG how to do it though, I think he is the only one on the forum who knows how.

! just a thought

i caused my red light of doom to come on/limp mode
after i turned up my turbo, when you put your foot down hard it went into limp mode
so i backed it of until it was running ok ie no red light/limp mode

as far as im aware shes a mk5 i think. she has the smiley front end and the same dashboard as my old s reg transit. locking pins were all spot on to be honest. ford said there machine prob would not find the issue, i do know shes a drive by wire so as im aware that would be an epic system....
how do you wind the turbo down???
have also been told it could be a sensor, what sensor could it be ????????

NO! do not wind the turbo down, it won't be the problem unless someone has gone mad fiddling with it in the past.

The other thing to do is take the electrical plug off the back of the injection pump, inspect the pins for corrosion/water spray with WD40 and put it back on/take it off a few times to try and improve the electrical connections.

Don't do anything else until you have got the codes read... otherwise you are p*ssing in to the wind.

It could be the crank sensor, boost sensor, temperature sensor etc etc and you would just be guessing.

ok thanks i will wd40 that later on and take it from there, need to find someone now with diagnostics machine. ford want silly money to check.... also dont think turbos ever been touched..Im pretty sure its something really simple to fix but need to pinpoint it...

The only machines guaranteed to read it correctly are the Ford FDS2000 system (which is obsolete & dealers no longer use it) and the lucas laser 2000.

Other machines do work though... (E.g. sykes picavant ACR)
