Optimum speed to change gear

Postby 2424 » Thu May 16, 2013 1:54 pm

Hi,

I have short wheelbase high top camper with a non-turbo 2.5Di. Would be interested to know what road speed is best to shift up the gears without over revving the engine as I have no rev counter. The van is driven once every 2-3 weeks and normally I shift into 2nd at 10mphr, 3rd at 20mphr and so on with the exception of 5th at around 45mphr+ or else it takes forever to get up to cruising speed of 55-60mphr.

Thanks,

well that depends on what you are trying to achieve.
as well as:
gradient
condition of the road
condition of the engine
weather
weight of the vehicle
diff ratio
tyre size
how much pressure is in the tyres
etc
etc
so you arn't going to get a meaningful answer

You can't over-rev the 2.5di ;) If you want to get up to speed quicker, possibly even saving some fuel, why not think about fitting a turbo? Transits arn't the most aerodynamic things in the world - especially the high tops, so you shouldnt expect a rocket ship. Also... have a look at this viewtopic.php?f=18&t=3968

You'll do it more harm changing up early and making it labour than you would making it rev a bit!
Ignore the actual speed you change up at, and change when it feels right. You could easily add 5 mph to the speed of each change without doing it any harm.

There are many old Dis out there that only ever got changed up a gear when the engine got to the rev limiter at 4000 rpm! And it hasn't done them any harm.
