When did a mk 4/5 become smiley?

Postby m8form8 » Wed Apr 01, 2015 9:30 am

Have to say I am a bit confused on when a mk 4 became a mk5. When I bought my 1995 automatic transit motor home I understood it was a mk5 due to its year and the banana engine fitted, however it seems it is not. Someone says it is a new generation model? Looking at the photo gallery on here it seems it looks more mk3 so how does one measure the difference? :?: :?: :?:

What probably adds to the confusion is that a lot of motor caravan conversions added a custom grille panel to make their product unique.

Pretty much all coachbuilt autosleepers took about 6 months from production date to roll out to registration. My old amethyst for example is the newest mk4 known to mankind.. or at least this forum being registered somewhere in later half of 1995.

To clear it up, yours is a:

92-94 Ford Transit 150 LWB (Mk4)
Livin' in me van in Portugal.

'93 Mk4 TD 150L Hitop Custom Camper
100ps Epic blue spot

I am interested in what difference there is mechanically? Does the so called banana engine have any relevance when did that start production life? :?: I do seem to have conflicting spares information when trying to find parts for mine.. :?:

Very little :!:

the "banana" manifold was designed to "tune" the length of the induction tract and to smoothen the flow of air for combustion into the engine (to give slight increase in power and efficiency)

listings for Transit parts are often confusing anyway (even if you give the reg number and/or part numbers) some parts are listed as fitting all models 86 to 2000 and are often wrong (tho some will fit the whole range) even Fords own "finis" codes can be confusing (the parts can have the same part number but a different finis code depending on the year)

double check by asking on the forum before you order anything you're not sure about (a great wealth of knowledge and experience is available HERE)

Think I am getting a clearer picture now thanks folks. Apart from the grille it seems there is little difference between a mk4 and a mk 5 then.. :?:

Bonnet badge disappeared on Mk5 (it went into the grille)

Mirrors changed

Dash changed (not for the better in my opinion)

Headlamp lenses changed to plastic on Mk5 (definitely not a good change)

few other bits and bobs but nothing drastic

Due to having had the shortest production run of all transits, (only 3 years) the Mk4 is fast becoming "a bit of a rarity" :)
