Cam belt snapped after fuel pump recon...

Postby zappa » Wed Oct 18, 2017 6:00 pm

I'm after some wisdom if I may pick your brains...

Having failed it's MOT for a leaking fuel pump my transit (2.5di non banana non turbo) went to have its fuel pump (Bosch) reconditioned to sort the leak at a specialists. Today I received a phone call to say on test driving the vechile the cam belt snapped but I've been assured these things aren't related. The garage was planning to fit a new belt and test it to see if the valves are bent etc. The cambelt was replaced 3-4 years, 10-15k miles ago (it's a camper so not used loads)

So my questions...

1) Can the fuel pump be removed and recon'd without removing cam belt?

2) would valves be bent or is this a non interference engine? On googleing I've read that it's more likely con rods/rockers would be damaged.

3) could it just be coincidence?

4) is there any way to prove the garage is at fault if indeed they are.

Cheers

The fuel pump can be removed WITHOUT going anywhere near the cam belt.
The pump sits on top of the engine and the belt is in front of the engine underneath the cover.

At worst a snapped belt, usually, bends pushrods and may snap a rocker.
Both are easily fixed and relatively cheap to repair/replace.

Assuming this is a 2.5 di !

Hth
:)

Reread and it is a di. Will be an easy fix if a garage is doing it.
In fact it's doable yourself if you can hold a spanner! Cambelt kits are cheap.

why a garage would re use the old belt (even for testing)

Normally no valve or internal enigine dammage. :D

external =
several pushrods and a rocker or 2 :(

Did the fix the leak?

Belt snapping is entirely their responsability unless they can show they haven't disturbed the pump - depends where it was leaking.

Cambelt off to get pump off and shouldn't be reused. Its a 5 year service interval so it shouldn't have been put back on. Its their liability as far as I am concerned

There is always a slim chance of valve damage but its not common.

£20-£30 in 2nd hand parts and less than an hour to fit - especially as they were going to do the cambelt anyway (wern't they???). Make sure they set the valve clearances when it all goes back together.

Haha the I know. I'd like to see that myself.

Can't believe I wrote that, make no sense. I'm looking at a di pump on th bench right now and the belt clearly goes over pulley.

Nipper had me up @ 5:30 , thanks son, hard day @ the graft = written nonsense.

I wonder if the garage never timed it up right and its skipped a tooth before snapping the belt. I hope there liable !
