Power steering conversion

Postby sarmatt1 » Sat Feb 17, 2018 11:17 am

Hi.

I have 1996 swb 2.0 petrol, but non power steering.
Does anyone know if the diesel model power steering system is the same as the petrol?
I am hoping it’s maybe just a different bracket for the pump on the engine.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Matt

sarmatt1,The steering rack is the same as the diesel, which is petrol.
Pumps are different.

Hi dumper.
Thanks for your reply.
If it’s all working ok, how much would you like for it?
Also, I am near Gatwick for logistics side of things.
Thanks

Quite prepared to be corrected here, I think you will need a duplex crank pulley, unless already fitted, a pinto or DOHC pump mounting bracket plus pump, reservoir, hoses and a belt.

Hi vanfox.
Thanks for reply. I was thinking the engine bracket would probably be different to the Diesel engine.
Trouble being, the petrol vans are not too common so unfortunately I can’t just ask someone to look under their bonnet.
More research needed I think when I get time.
Thanks

These engines were fitted to, amongst others, the Sierra etc. Some had power steering, go look/ask around breakers. If you buy the Haynes book for the petrol transit, 1468, most all will be revealed.

Two years ago, I helped my girlfrend buy and change the 2.0L petrol engine on the Transit.
We bought a motor and power steering pump from a gasoline Sierra.
The pump is exactly the same.
A transitional plate and a flywheel from the old motor were installed on the motor from the Sierra.

Let us know how you get on. I may need to consider power steering when this thing eventually gets back on the road.

If you fancy a trip to Haywards Heath next time i am there you can look at a DOHC with PAS, and a diesel with PAS at the same time as yours to see whats different. I have a diesel setup spare and sitting in the back of a van too

As an alternative would it be possible to adapt an electric steering pump instead of using the belt driven power sucker?
Just a thought....
