Took a non working starter apart and removed the brush box, took an old angle grinder and then removed and then filed down its brushes to fit the transit starter brush box, soldered the brushes in and I've got a working starter as a spare now. :D

Maiden voyage with the rusty ships anchor axle was a sucess :D
using gps speedo it's showing the same "indicated-actual" speed difference as the old one.
SO.....
It must be a 4.63 :D

dropped in lucky last week when diff failed.
first breakers I phoned had a complete axle already out of a donor motor.
They delivered it as well :D

used the extended U bolts (at some point when the weather warms up)
Going to add a couple of extra leaf springs to make it sit a bit better when fully loaded.

Reducers 4.1: 1 and 4.63: 1 are used on different rear axles.
Тype H and type G.
Type H has version 4.56: 1 reducer.

Crown wheel and pinion had a domestic. Pinion lost. Here's a couple of the larger bits that should live in the diff housingImageImage

Similar pieces of shank teeth there are with me.
On the move was heard a knock in the reducer?
I replaced the reducer (H-axis) 4,11 by 4,56.
For the correct operation of the speedometer, you need to replace the gearbox with the one that worked with the reducer 4,56.
It costs about 100 dollars and my work.
The error in measuring speed and mileage is 11%.
I bought a smartphone with the GPS function and set the "speedometer" option. I'll have to check the accuracy of my speedometer.

Was it getting dodgy or did it just break without warning?

TBH I've been living on borrowed time for the last year.
see the bottom of page 26 and work forward :(
I knew 1 of the pinion teeth had a chip out of it
although for the time it's lasted it didn't make any noise until it eventually failed .
Only warning was about 2 miles into the 6 mile return journey from the coal depot
it started to humm in 4th and 5th.
By the time I nursed it back home it was rattling slightly.
jacked it up (chocked the front wheels) put it in gear with the engine running and used
one of these stethoscope listening things.
Started with the bearings and worked back.
Diff sounded like a washing machine full of nuts and bolts on fast spin

2 days of using a hired mk8 (900kg payload)
then a day and a half removing the old axle and fitting the "new to me" one.

At that time my car was 27 years old.
As it used by the previous owners, I do not know.
A year ago I installed a turbo engine.
First there was a slight knock and vibration, I thought that the problem with the cardan shaft. I took off the shaft, inspected it, everything was fine. About 200 kilometers later, the knock suddenly became stronger. I reached the parking lot and started to buy another gearbox.
