I don`t know too.
But I think that the reason in the thermostat.
The design of the thermostat is such that over time the thermoactive substance leaks from the ampoule and it begins to open at a higher temperature and the valve thermostat moves less.
Replace the thermostat with a new one.
The price of the thermostat is up to 10 pounds sterling.
It can be replaced without draining completely the liquid from the cooling system.

In the meantime.
Take the stat out and use the van normally.
If the gauge barely moves with no stat in then it was causing the overheating.

heater won't blow very warm though

I have an electric fan, why folk keep the viscous units is beyond me... Anyway, even in the hot weather, running at 3 tons (it's a 4x4 campervan), it's staying bang in the middle and not used the electric fan, So I would hazard a guess that something is either restricting your water or not pumping it correctly. The water should naturally thermo- syphon around the engine, but this my not be enough to stop it going towards the red. Need to check how much water is being pumped, how, I don't know.

I litteraly just came on here to post, the exact same post.
2.5 td 100 PS, in perth australia, currently really cold wet weather, and for the first time ever, the gauge went up to 3/4 the way to red last week.
And tonight, while it was very cold out, the gauge went up to midway, wich it never does unless climing long long hills.

Mine I suspect has no thermostat, as the temp gauge varies considerably up and down during the journey, and usually sits way tooo cold, like just touchign the operating range line, almost at the very left.
Having no thermostat, actually causes big problems.
No thermostat means no back pressure on the water pump, which creates cavitation (aeration of the water aroundthe fins of the water pump) which increases corrosion and wear on the vanes in an exponential amount.
My fear is that im probabyl experiencing this, but it could be that
a. the rain is getting in to the electronics and shorting the temp sensor a bit, or
b. the rain is getting into a connector perhaps just creating a good contact in a slightly coroded connection to the temp sensor, indicating a more correct warm temp when its raining.

Nothing felt remarkably hot when i had the really hot situation, however i got home, and found i needed about 2 litres of coolant (water) to bring it up to the normal mark, and it hasnt crept that frar since then. The creep up was incredibly fast, like i watched the gauge move.

So theres some food for thought, its a complicated subject with far too many variables.

Without the thermostat to block the bypass ( that's what the second plate on the thermostat is for!) when the engine gets hot, the engine WILL overheat!

So I've run with no thermostat this morning delivering euro pallets. Last run with approx 1200kg on the back of the motor. Did 60 miles so the motor should be as warm as it's going to get.

It will be the sensor at the front of the housing, that’s the TD temperature sensor the other is just the gauge.
That sensor isn’t on a non TD only the TD di’s.
