LUCAS CAV PUMP Adjustment

Postby Natriumau » Tue Aug 21, 2018 2:22 am

Can anyone tell me what's going on with this pump? I've removed the blue plastic protector and I'm trying to increase the diesel flow as suggested by another member but I cant figure out which part I'm meant to be turning. The small end part with the hex in it turns no problem but doesn't seem to have any effect. the middle and large parts are tight and don't turn easily so I wanted to check with any experienced members before forcing anything else to move!

That’s different to the one I had but it looks like you undo the centre nut and turn the outer part in or out but not sure .
on mine it was a coller you removed and turned a splined shaft to increase fuel

by centre nut do you mean the one in the middle? Both that and the big one on the right (as my lovely yellow arrows go) are tight and the little one on the left rotates relatively freely, about what I would expect for an adjustment screw. It doesn't SEEM to have done anything though after two full turns clockwise... Maybe I'm just not noticing a subtle difference. Would love to see the insides or a manual or something for these bloody things as I expect they're simple enough if you see inside them.

I know next to nothing about Lucas cav pumps but from reading on the forum they are quite a bit more involved to turn the fuel up than the Bosch pump, which it does sound like dumper is describing adjusting the fuel on a Bosch not a cav pump but my apologies if I’m wrong.
Just be careful you don’t muck your pump up with a misunderstanding of pump types
Dumper could be a complete genius I’m not contradictinging his advice but just confirm your both on the same page before adjusting anymore would be my advice.

It was definitely a Lucas cav on a 1986 mk 3 I didn’t do the adjustment myself as part of my job at the time I was aloud parts for my van it allways had a lumpy inconsistent tickover so work said take it off and send it to parkingsons at Lincoln and have it overhauled when re fitted tickover was ok but down on power so took van back and they did this adjustment it did improve it but not as good as before the guy who did the pump said they are a difficult pump to set up lots of adjustment inside that could only be done as you build up the pump and the adjustment he did was all he could do I think he was fobing me off to be fair but as I had not payed for it to be done I let it go as I said the photos of the pump are different to what I had that must be a later model forgot to say I was there and seen him adjust it and did ask another diesel shop and they confirmed the adjustment

Fair enough advice, like I said I know nothing about the cav pumps apart from there pretty sh*tt and prone to leaking
There is plenty of people on here that do no lots about them and the general consensus is change to a later Bosch pump or engine transplant will be much less ball ache :x

Yes twin wheel camper fuel pumps are a black art that’s best left to the experts but sometimes they will pass on some of their little tricks to us mere mortals as fo Bosch pumps been better then lucus we had a fleet of my 2&3s and not many with the Bosch pump but the lucus always seemed the faster van on a1989 a mk3 twin wheel van I swoped a Bosch to a lucus and it ran ok and was probably a bit better
