MK5 Transit EPIC Issues - Misfire

Postby JAM3012 » Sun Aug 12, 2018 7:56 pm

Hi All,

Went to go away in the van and started it up all of a sudden there is a misfire and white smoke. I personally don't think it's a head gasket I've managed to get the fault codes from a borrowed reader and this is what it's returned.

P1184 Engine Temp out of TEA Range
P1180 Fuel Delivery Fault
P1191 TP (Gas) Key Line Voltage
P1182 Pedal Position Fault

P1306 Kickdown Relay Fault - I'll replace the 4 Pin Relay
P1318 Battery Low - Get New battery
P1671 Battery Module Voltage Out Of Range - Get new battery

P1184, P1180, P1191 and P1182 make me think its the Throttle Potentiometer. Currently the van runs will rev, but sometimes you hit the throttle and it's there other times it isn't. Also interestingley it stays running once the ignition is off until i hit the accelerator. Suggesting the ECU is confused :?: .

Any Advice? Anybody know where to get a new potentiometer? P/N 97VB-9F832-AB

Thanks,
James

Where are you?

I just happen to have a pedal in the boot of my car (and diagnostic gear).

Might also need a fuel filter!

Hi Matt,

I'm based in Derbyshire, Matlock to be specific.

Do you want to sell the pedal?

Cheers,
James

Yes I can sell the pedal.

What diagnostic gear was used?

Also check the plug on the back of the pump for water ingress/corrosion/backed off pins

Matt,

Sent you a PM about the pedal. I'll find out what gear was used for the diagnostic tonight and get back to you.

Thanks for the advice,
James

Matt, I got the pedal. Thank you!

So...

More developments, new pedal fitted. Still the same issue.

It may be that I cannot clear the fault codes now, so i disconnected the battery for 15 mins to see if that would clear and it did not.

The previous diagnostic tool used was a SNAPON computer.

Any other advice? Anyone know of someone in Derbyshire with a Lucas Laser 2000?

Cheers

Snap on will be as reliable as a promise from a politician
I’ve tried with my brothers and it wouldn’t even communicate with it and at that time it was running up to date software.
As you know it needs a Lucas laser or the old ford scanner everything else can’t be relied on unfortunately :(

Gents,

Would one of you be so kind as to photograph the relay box under the bonnet where the kickdown relay lives? I've moved. a couple of them around and stupidly didn't take a photograph.

In addition to the faults registered above there is a fault where the engine doesn't stop when switched off. To me it feels like the Fuel Injection is running out of time, because as soon as you hit the gas with the keys switched off the engine dies. Any ideas?

So now it's a matter of getting an accurate diagnostic I guess?

Cheers,
James

Gents,

Can anyone with an auto transit take a picture of their relay box under the bonnet and post? I'm a moron and forgot to take pictures of the relay locations, Transit 2.5 TDI Automatic V-Reg (2000)

Next step fix the EPIC ESOS!

James

Last time an old transit of mine started to misfire and pour out white/grey looking smoke it had broken the tip off an injector some how. One new injector and problem was solved. Maybe pull them out for a quick look if you have tools for it?

So the saga continues:

After finally getting my hands on a LUCAS Laser 2000 and using a number of different Software and hardware modules the ECU is apparently uncommunicative.

My feeling is there is an issue with OBD port as the van starts and runs although it being a lumpy idle.

Does anyone have a pin out so for the OBD Port so I can run a check? Or a location for the ECU and I can pull that out to run diagnostics?

Or any other advice?

Cheers,
James

On to the next stage of the Saga.

So all Fault codes finally cleared by going to a FI Specialist near me. All Faults cleared successfully but still the misfire.

I'm now narrowing it down to the following:

Injector Failure (Tip Burnt off) - But why would it blow white smoke if its being over fuelled?
Lack of compression or leakage on a cylinder - Valve issue perhaps?

To all knowledgeable folks here, anyone experienced anything similar? Before I start tearing into it.

Thanks for all the help so far guys,
James

It looks like removing and checking the injectors and if ok then a compression test is the order of the day.

White smoke - steam or vapourised (unburnt) diesel....
