Transit 96 td cambelt change

Postby soooo » Tue May 26, 2009 5:56 am

Hi

I did replace a new cambelt and an automatic tensioner yesterday but now that damn red light / engine light shining all the time. Before cambelt change this red light came on after 5-50min of drive. Sometimes never.

Did i something wrong?

- Removed crank angle sensor and put in 13mm drill to lock crankshaft. This should be quite clear.
- Locked camshaft pulley with 8mm bolt. This should be also quite clear.

but what about pump timing? I did lock it with 6mm bolt in the "timing hole", is this correct? Old cambelt / timing were installed same marks.

Thanks in advance!

Something's slipped, check again all pins of CORRECT size go in.
PS correct timing hole on flywheel allows pin to go right through

It goes fine when the engine light is off. No smoke, fires up fine at cold or warm. Idles normally etc.

After ~1min of drive, engine light turn on. Does it everytime now.

I found these instructions from older topics:

In picture 6, my pump pulley timing doesn't correspond with the picture when i lock it. If i remember correctly that U-shape hole facing directly up. So.. should i change pump timing that it correspond with the picture 6?

Step 2 is setting the tensioner, you need to line it up as shown in step 8, then tighten the bolt up to hold it at that setting.

How tight should it be? I just turned it so that the allen key bit of the cam was facing the belt - is that too tight?

ok, i'll do that. I am using a 9mm and 10mm for the flywheel as i don't have a 13, could being out by that 3mm make that much difference. Also, how much could the timing be out without causing any damage to the valves or pushrods?

I'll get that today. The belt has been on for about a week but only done about 20 miles... Think it'll be alright?

Hello

After reading here and Hayens manual I have changed the cam belt.Very easy and straight forward job. I removed the radiator, and then the access was great. Tomorrow I will get new coolant and start it. Hope everything is ok.

this duz happen as when the epic was desined that auto adj belt tensioner was not out, so when it adjusts it is out side the ecu pump timing paramiters, do not worry as it will run for ever with ecu light on. i had x2 (one in and ldv and one a transit same thing happend and ran a life time with no probs) after belt change with new tensioner. IT WIIL BE OK. (TRUST ME)  ps, note the light will come on when it gets norm opp temp and then drop down to tick over. ( if you keep revs up and at norm opp temp and not drop down to tick over the light will not come on) strange, but hey we all have to go to idle at some time.

Everything worked very well :D :D

The cost at Ford dealer in Norway was 870£
My cost was 213£
Not often I had that much paid for my work. It was my first time, and I was in no hurry, so I think I used 3-4 hour. Think I will do it in 2 the next time. The belt looked fine but the tensioner was not good. And the fan-belt war almost off.
My brother i driving a Subaru, 17 years old, whit its original belt. But this car will not be damaged if the belt break
