Left the cold start club BUT...

Postby evilgoat » Sat Feb 04, 2012 2:10 pm

I'm still not happy.
She catches and farts on the second go and after a few seconds will run hapilly. Once shes warm second turn of the engine and shes off. Its been a hell of a long run to get this far and this is all thats been done

Batteries
Starter wiring replaced
Earth straps replaced
Charge system checked
Battery crosslink cable replaced
New earths added to body
Fuel filter replaced
Thermostart system installed and tested
Air filter changed
EGR blanked, throttle plate removed
OIl and filter changed

Now she'll go on the second or third go, but as said, she'll fart and missfire then just catch and she'll be off. While trying to start I get shedloads of white smoke which from the smell is unburned deisel. Id rather not have the plumes of smoke and crap and such a fight to start. When its awrmer she'll go so its still a temp related issue.

Any ideas?

You may have an injector thats not up to scratch, hence the unburnt fuel.

leakoff mod done in the form of the feed to the catchtank for the thermostart, shouldnt be needed.

Belt, I dont know, *should* have been done before I got the bus but I'm thinking timing is the only thing thats not catastrophic I have left to check.

Injectors I guess is possible, she had a fuel filter full of injector cleaner not long after I got it. Surely a bad injector would show up with normal running too?

I'd go with the timing being out also, hence the unburnt diesel after startup. If you don't know the history of the belt get it changed and timed up properly and I bet it'll fire staight up first turn of the key.

Have the autodata book and locking pins. just need a rad spanner (cheap enough) and a sane working temp outside :)

What about fuel supply?

Could the fuel be getting restricted or a leak in the fuel system be drawing in air, allowing it to run back to the tank?

Hence the two or three turns to get it started?

So rather than it being the case of starting ok when its warm, its actually starting ok because the fuel system is primed?

I've had similar symptoms with a blocked fuel pick up within the fuel tank and also a split fuel hose just before the pump.

Not sure what engine you have but if you try starting it from cold while feeding fuel directly into the pump from a small container that may rule out these possibilities.

Sounds like you've tried everything else..

Its a complete cock to troubleshoot as even in this weather she needs to stand for a good few hours before she will refuse to go. I am wondering if she's slowly draining back to the tank somewhere

Crank pin in and pump pin wont go in, its not far out, pin is at an angle, but probobly enough.

I apear to have a milk float motor attached to the engine so I guess I have the bigger starter.

You need to slacken the pump pulley bolts, and adjust so the pin slides in with no effort

Right did a whole load of niggly jobs at the same time. Retimed her from scratchas there wasnt enough adjustment to bring her into adjustment on the bolts. All three pins slip in easilly. Fixed a niggly leak, waxoyled a patch I found, new drive belts, fitted a new power lead from battery 2 to the starter and a new earth strap from the second battery.

End resutl was turned the key and she went on possibly the first revolution of the engine. Shes not as cold as first thing in the morning but shes been sat there three hours with no coolant and indeed nothing protecting the engine from the wind. She would normaly struggle. Also no smoke, nothing, nada, zip. So fingers crossed, tomorrow morning we'll know for sure.
