Right then lads, as you all know, an Essex engine conversion plate is in the 'pipeline', we have the first prototype below;
Image
Still a bit of work to do on these.

The twin pulley arrangement to provide a drive belt for the power steering pump has reach the manufacturing stage, hopefully one will be completed by next week. This consists of an adapter that bolts to the Essex front pulley, using the existing 'tapped' holes and provides a mounting for a second pulley, we are using the pulley from a 2.5di power steering pump. This is of an appropriate diameter and most importantly, readily available pre-used, thus helping to keep conversion costs to a minimum.

Hi mate,
The drawings are done for the mount plates, but I will have to stuff the engine in the Surrogate Mother so I can finalise the mounting positions.
They will be similar to the Pinto/Mk5 ones, plate each end, box section in between, maybe some gussets.
Crankshaft pulley adapter to provide a second pulley and a pas pump bracket to use the di pas pump.
All in good time Rob!

This will make the truck LEZ compliant and therefore avoid the need for the customer to replace the vehicle with a newer unit.
I will start a thread, or add to this one, of the work. This will including pictures and other information, part numbers and anything else that may be of use to you chaps.
We are in the process of purchasing a 'project' van to use as a 'guinea pig' and hope the information will be of use to some of you.
We have made arrangements with local firms to 'reproduce' some of the parts, the engine mounts will be manufactured 'in house'.
The hope is that once the test has been completed that we will be able to supply 'kits' and even carry out the work for any of you who still need to meet the LEZ.
We are considering other engines, 2.0 zetec as fitted to the early Mondeo, a 3.0 essex for another forum member, (secret :wink: ), any other suggestions :?:
Watch this space :!:

i did fit a 1800 diesel escort van mk 4/5 cant remember what one but any did put that in a mk 1 transit that had a pinto befor, tricky litle thing to do but did get it in, and mounted proper like but never got it running as van got vandeld on the farm, so as for engine direction cant say.. lez compliant ,, dout it. food for fort, pricless.

HI mate,
The engine adapter, Essex to MT75 is finally sorted, the second pulley for the crankshaft to drive the di pas pump has been drawn up and produced, all the engine mounting plates have been drawn up, all I have to do is find workshop space/time to fit the Essex in the Surrogate Mother so as to finalise all the 'connections'.

I am hoping to have it all installed and sorted by Transitmania, so as to 'showcase' all the parts.

You can take a man out of a transit but you cant take the transit out of the man

Hi mate, to meet with LEZ compliance, you can NOT fit a newer diesel engine, but you CAN fit ANY petrol engine :!:
Daft though it seams, the above is the case.

If you have a commercial vehicle that is fitted with a diesel engine and is not LEZ compliant, then you have two options;
Particulate filter, a LOT of money,
or;
Fit a petrol engine.

A point to note, a non commercial vehicle, such as a mini bus, fitted with a petrol engine WILL require a cat and therefore a fuel injected engine with all the associated electronic management system, and be subject to a cat test at MOT.
A commercial vehicle first registered before August 2002 does NOT require a cat and can therefore be fitted with a carb engine, this simplifies installation a lot.

The simplest installation is the Pinto, as detailed in this thread, utilising our power steering pump bracket so as to retain the 2.5Di power steering setup and our engine mounting brackets if your vehicle is a Mk5.
Another option is using the 2.3/2.8 carb Granada engine, this can be fitted to the Mt75 gearbox using the 2.9 SVO adapter kit. These kits are rare and therefore expensive, the distributor is positioned at the rear of these engines, making access difficult in a Transit, we have not produced power steering brackets for these engines as yet.
The final Ford option is the 2.5/3.0 Essex V6, this is a great engine, easily and cheaply available, has a lot of low down torque making it ideally suited to a heavy vehicle such as a Transit and has the distributor at the front making access easy. We have developed a kit to install these engines in Transits onto the 2.5Di Mt75 gearbox and provide engine mountings and power steering pump fitting brackets.

Of course, any petrol engine could be fitted to achieve LEZ compliance, but in most cases, owners of the older non compliant Transits are on a limited budget, so the most cost effective solution is often what is required.

just out of interest, as this is getting me thinking, what would the mpg of all ot the engines talk about cost to run, Granada, pinto and maybe the later monaos vtec engine?

pinto in my van returns 10 miles per liter if i drive on one choke. as soon as the second one opens its game over but well fun and worth 10miles/liter in my book even 5 :lol:

can sit as 75 on one choke , open second to pass stuff (weber 32/36 driven by me)

I think the mpg's of the 3.0 V6 would be around to low 20's, judging from those on here with standard Ford fitments.
But, these would be lwb vans running a four speed box, our kits utilise the Mt75 five speed.
So with a swb being driven sensibly on a run, 30mpg might be possible if a high ratio diff was fitted.

This thread details the fitment of a Pinto in a Mk4 lwb chassis cab used by a scaffolding contractor who is a regular customer, the vehicle is often 'well laden' and while the owner has said that running costs are increased, he is not unhappy with the results. He used to own one with an Essex V6 and has commented that it was costly to run but that was on a four speed box and scaffolders never drive slowly!

The later electronically controlled engines would give better consumption and have better power outputs for their size but there are additional complications with installing these engines.
The Zetec 2.0 would be a good option, but to convert this engine to rwd format, as done by the kit car lads, requires some expensive external components, none of which are specifically manufactured for the Transit, then there is the PATS system built into the ECU to overcome and a lot of additional wiring compared to a simple carb engine.
Those with the necessary skills, or finances to pay someone who has, to proceed with the Zetec fitment are unlikely to need the information contained within this thread, Zetec fitments in rwd applications are well documented in various kit car forums.
Given the amount of additional work/cost required to install fuel injection and electronic management systems, one has to wonder if the overall result is worth the additional effort, unless out and out performance if what is required.

We have been asked by a local garage that specialises in Jap imports to develop a 'kit' for the Nissan 300zx twin turbo engine, probably no more work than a Zetec installation but with a more worthwhile, (perhaps!) result.

I appreciate that many of you would prefer to maintain the 'heritage' of your vehicle and use Ford engines, but once you start to look outside the blue oval, there are a lot of other, many simpler, options.
