Mk5 Radio Wiring....

Postby IgorVigor » Thu Feb 02, 2012 5:54 pm

Right, I wanted to ask all of you about the radio wiring...

I have an aftermarket CD player that I've fitted in my transit...

the standard Ford cassette player would work without the ignition on.

the aftermarket CD player (a Kenwood with an adaptor to link it to the transit wiring), works fine, apart from I need the ignition on.

now it has 2 wires (a red and a yellow) that can be swapped over for certain vehicles (mainly VW's)

does the transit require these 2 wires to be swapped over to allow it to work without the ignition on?

if need be, I'll run a new power cable (permanent live)....

red one is switched from ign, this one plugs into a single one. the yellow or orange will have 2 sockets, so you can run stereo with ignition off.
just dont get caught out with a flat battery!
if you plug red into yellow then the yellow(perm live to batt) gives the switched red wire a perm feed as if the key glued in ignition
blue wire goes to power antenna or amplifier remote on terminal

reallly thin yellow MIGHT be illuminaton with headlights

on mine the red and yellow wires leave the unit, and before the ISO connector they have a bullet connector and socket.

you can swap the wires over for certain vehicles (VW or example), but you can't double them up without modding the wiring....

I've had a proper look, and the wires from the CD player go to the correct wires on the loom....

the memory wire is permanent live, and it does work (the CD player will resume the song where it was turned off)...

oh well, looks like I need to run a new wire to the unit.....

I want it to work without the ignition on, so I can leave it playing when working on the vehicle....or if I'm sitting in a car park waiting for someone (that sounds a little wrong   )

oh well, at least its not going to be hard......I have a permanent live wire that runs from the fusebox up past the CD player anyway (it was an alarm wire I believe)

I'll do that when I can :)

I'll just have to slide my hand to the radio via the dash tray hole (above the glovebox), so I can get to the supporting bracket

unless its easy to remove the vent next to the radio....

"think" the vent will pop out with 2 small flat screwdrivers one either side of vent in edges. dont quote me on that tho if not try removing passenger dash top pod you can see stereo thru the holes :D

I forgot to update this

I wired the 2 power wires from the radio into the permanent live feed, so it now works without the ignition on :D

I did it when I had the dash apart to get the heater fan working

I did something similar years ago on a van, I had a seperate toggle switch on the dash, so that I could override the ignition feed 8)
With the switch in one position, it worked normally, switching off when the engine was stopped, and in the other, the radio would work when the engine was off
I did it that way because on a couple of occasions, I left the van with the radio on, because I had turned it down and not off  :P
