Tone, this is an old topic, last post on it was sept 17 2012.
Warblington, who started the topic has only 6 treads, all written in this topic.
It is possible he never opens this forum again.
You could PM him, (private message).
You could start a new topic with your problem.
Normally, diesels are not build for idling.
Personally, if the smoke disappears after a while, I would not starting to work on it, but that's just my thoughts....
However, If the body of the van is sound, you could think it over, to buy a spare engine now, now that they are still available and reasonable cheap.
That's what I have done. :D

Thanks. I've sent him a PM. Apart from smoke after being stationery the motor runs good. Mileage is 80k but add another 30% because it idles to run the ice cream machine. Body is v good no rust never driven on salted roads. I've got time to ponder, gonna be a winter job. Maybe take head off, check valves, if check oil rings then it's a new engine. I am worried about getting a engine with an unknown history, it must be reliable. A day off the road is can be expensive.
Thanks

If reliability is a must have you thought about getting a spare engine rebuilt, maybe a spare box and axle and a few spares like a starter, water pump etc. The youngest of these vans must be 15 year old.

For the benefit of us non-icecream vendors, what does the Di do all day, actually run the machine, charge the battery or what?

Morning. On a van with a carpigiani machine or similar, there is belt driven take off from the engine. This turns all the machine parts, compressor, condenser fan, ice cream pump etc via a number of belt driven shafts. Power on/off is enabled by electric clutches. Is it also possible to fit a high output alternator for 3000w invertor to power the freezer or slush machine. So no engine on means no 99. Thanks
