Pinto starting issues

Postby Movin_on » Mon May 13, 2013 9:19 pm

I have F reg MK3 recovery truck with a pinto engine.
Starting the truck became difficult over winter so i assumed it was cold start issues due to the cold winter we have just experienced.
It wont start normally. However, if I feed petrol into the carburetor petrol reserve through carburetor fuel inlet but will start and run happily only for a short while , i assume until that runs out. So I have ruled out an engine /spark /carburetor issue.

I have the tank full of petrol. I have tried sucking the fuel line before carburetor and observed that i wont get a steady flow of fuel.
I have also taken the fuel line before the fuel pump and tried sucking, still no steady fuel flow as above. So I am tempted to think that it may be a blocked petrol filter.

So my question is where would the fuel filter in a pinto truck be located, as I have followed the fuel lines all the way to the tank with no filter in sight.
I have tried googling as to whether there would be an in-tank petrol filter with no conclusive results.

Any help/suggestions will be mostly appreciated

more likely rust or debris partially blocking a fuel line or a tank breather blocked...

thats my 10 pence

it only cost about 20 quid to re run a new flow and return on my pinto/essex engines(same pipes used on the essex)

my breather (mk5) is apparently up the neck of the filler (i think :!: ), yours may be different!

Could be the filter on the pickup pipe blocked ? if it was the breather it would flow ok with the filler cap off, you could try blowing back down the line with compressed air but that will most likely blow the filter appart (it's only a gause tube slid over the end of the pipe).
The carb should hold enough fuel overnight to start so i'd guess the float chamber is running low all the time ?
Sucking from after the pump wont work that well as the pump will prevent and real amount of fuel being drawn though but as you also have little flow from before it i'd susppect the filter rather than the pump, any other filter will be in the line from the pump to the carb.

Disconnect main fuel line going to tank attach long rubber hose to fuel pump going into a petrol can if it runs fine then you know its either thank or line blocked. I have also known the rod on a mechanical pump to wear or even the pump. Running a direct line to a fuel can will rule that out.

There is also a filter behind the intake on the carb when unscrewed thats if you running a twin choke webber like a 32/36 DGAV

Hi, I had problems like this on my 1997 van. Traced it to the bobbin filter on the dip pipe in the fuel tank. I lowered the tank enough from the body to remove the fuel gauge sender/dip pipe assembly and discarded the bobbin filter ( which was totally blocked). I replaced the filter with a inline throw away filter fitted near to the inlet of the lift pump. During the next 400 miles the throw away filter filled with dirt and was replaced ( easily !). There has been no more dirt collected since.
