Random misfire and running on 3 cylinders

Postby Stevejan » Mon Mar 10, 2014 3:27 pm

Hi, I am new to this forum and hope someone can help me. I own a 1998 mk5 2.5 di transit (good nick for its age). Its developed a fault where it randomly starts running on 3 cylinders and loses power. It first happened about a year ago and when I cracked an injector it picked back up and run fine for months. Lately though its started doing it much more frequently. Doesn't matter if its motorway running or crawling about in traffic. Some days it does it and other days its fine, you just never know. When you slacken an injector pipe and give it a few revs it goes back to normal. Have done the egr mod (Clipped opened the butterfly) a few months ago which gave it more go and cured the smoke when reversing problem. Havent done the leak off mod yet but heard that only helps with starting problems and she starts straight away in any weather so don't think its that. Changed the fuel filter and checked the tank breather and that's fine. Just been up the Transit Center,Dudley and had a word with the guy there who reckons the diesel pumps knackered but im not convinced. Surely if a pumps knackered its knackered (think its a bosch)? Any help would be greatly appreciated?

Maybe a weak injector? Did you always undo the same pipe?

Maybe try undoing each injector in turn, see if one doesn't make engine sound crappy.

Doesn't seem to matter which injector I undo, each one makes it sound crappy(er) and then it picks back up again when I tighten them back up and give it a few revs

Is the Transit center guy right do you think, could it be the pump knackered? Don't really want to spend that kind of money on it if not 100% sure( they quoted £200 fitted for a recon one)

This thread has similar issue. Leak off mod seemed to sort it:

How exactly do I do the leak off mod,is it just a case of putting the return pipe onto the front injector and capping the back one, also what is the best way of checking for air getting in? Thanks for all your help, much appreciated

Look along the top of the engine you will see the injectors.

You will also see 3 pipes joing them with a pipe on the back one running back to the tank. there is a blank on the front one

step 1 carefully pull the pipe from the rear injector (the long one to the tank)

step 2 carefully remove the blank from the front injector and push it onto the rear one youj just removed

step 3 fit joiner into original return and attach the new leak off pipe

step 4 route it along the inlet manifold and cable tie it up

Step 5 cut it to length and fit it to the front injector where the blank was

check the rest of the pipes for splits whilst you are there

There you go job done 8)

Hope this helps

Genuine fuel filter? Some aftermarket ones don't seal too well.

Sounds like it's pulling air in at either the lift pump or filterhead connections.

Non genuine im afraid, how do you use clear pipe to check for air has the fittings at the lift pump and fuel filter are weird special push in things?

Done the leak off mod and also checked for air at the lift pump and filter and seems to be ok. Started missing again today and has soon has I cracked the back injector it started running fine again. When I opened the back injector a lot of air came out followed by a spray of diesel and then all was well. Im still stumped. Any further advice from anyone? Thanks
