Changing knackered Mk4 seats

Postby dave88sw » Fri Mar 14, 2014 11:10 pm

Hi,

As you guys have all helped me out with questions i've had about an ambulance i've been asked to get tidied up and MOT'd (It's been converted into a burger van), i thought i'd show you a few things i've done. This post will just be the drivers seat but hopefully i'll follow up with the other alterations.

So, the seats in this van were absolutely disgusting, the grease from years of cooking had settled in the fabric (i pulled back the covers and thought they were vinyl!! )

but no they were fabric:

So i pulled the seats out, deciding i would never get them clean and chucked them on the bonfire.
Now i had to decide what to do about seats, any proper mk4 transit seats will all now be at least 20 years old and pretty worn out.
I'm a landy mechanic and have been around them all my life so i have all sorts of landy tat hanging around and amongst the crap is a pair of 1996 Discovery seats.

So, undo the 4 nuts to remove the transit seat from the base and discard the seat, undo the runners from the disco seat, compare the mounting holes and decide all we need is 2 lengths of box section with holes drilled to adapt the seat to suit the base.

And voila, one new drivers seat:

Let me know what you think

Cheers

The rust is just surface rust, it's in suprisingly good nick and it's already passed the MOT :). The seat has to come back out to put the floor covering in anyway so i'll slap some underseal around first  .

BigMonty, check exmoortrim for seat diaphragm:

Easy enough to fit :), i love disco seats they are really comfy.

Cheers for all the comments :)

These cost me nothing as they came out of a vehicle i broke for the engine but they go on ebay for around £40 the pair, i imagine if you go to a breaker you could get them cheaper :). Biggest benefit is that the mounts for the disco seats are completely flat and evenly spaced unlike so many cars where they are lopsided to sit on the transmission tunnel on one side.
