MK5 2.5 EGR blanking

Postby carr16v » Sun May 04, 2014 8:01 pm

I finally decided to remove my egr valve on my 94 2.5 turbo diesel with epic injection. So I took some photos and have attached them for anyone that might be interested. First photo is the removal of the egr valve and inlet housing.

Second photo is blanking plate fitted.
Image
Next photo is the surface on the housing that I had to resurface as it wasn't flat.
Image
This was because egr flange surface had corroded away.
Image
Blanking plate for inlet housing.
Image
Two blanking plates welded together.
Image
Then I had to grind some clearance between blanking plate and inlet pipe flange.
Image
Blanking plate fitted. I put fitting holes in plate so I could bolt egr valve in plate. This meant ecu still could see the egr valve so no errors or limp home mode.
Image
Finally a lick of paint. Probably should of used high temp paint but this will do for now.

Straight forward enough. A good road test now but seems a bit more response. I would of been losing some boost from the corroded egr flange.

Nice one. Iv'e blanked all my Di's in the past but not got round to the turbo yet. Was a bit worried about throwing up an error code/light. :)

Can anyone tell me for what reason Ford original placed this EGR valve?
Can anyone tell me allso why I would be better off with blanking this valve?

Egr is exhaust gas recirculation, they are fitted to reduce emissions and are bad because they put smelly exhaust poop back in the inlet ,in theory they should reuse any unburnt fuel in the exhaust but in practice they block up inlet manifolds ,well that's my take on them

EGR passes a 'regulated' amount of exhaust back into the inlet to slow down the combustion cycle, this is to reduce combustion temperature and thus reduce the amount of Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) produced at low revs.

DIs were particually bad for this as they actually have a bit of grunt low down.

In reality what the EGR does is fill the inlet manifold/tract with shite and slow turbo spool time on TDs.

DIs, both NA and TD can be blanked off without any issue, easiest way is a couple of blanking plates the same shape as the gaskets either end.

Sorry to drag up this old post up but can I just blank off the manifold, seal the pipe, remove the EGR totally and leave it at that?

Running the Bosch conversation.

Yes, just blank it. On turbo engines the egr is controlled by the ECU, which becomes virtually redundant when a manual Bosch pump is fitted.

Sorry to resurrect a 9 year old statement but did you sort your EML issue? I'm just about to blank mine off.
