Lift pump also provides a constant over supply of fuel to the filter head, helps with purging air and preventing air leaking into the inlet supply.

Internal vane pump is on the pump drive shaft imediately behind the front cover - under the inlet port.

I wonder how long it would take the internal vane pump to suck fuel from the tank if you run out? If Ford fitted a lift pump I'm sticking with it.

Could really do with some pics of the connection for a gauge.

Lift pumps certainly don't do any harm, but the vast majority of vehicles fitted with VE pumps, and their later electronic derrivatives do not use a lift pump. The best thing to do IMHO is to fit a squeezy primer bulb, they are available everywhere, for less than a tenner, all you have to do after you've primed the pump, which takes a few seconds (unless you have a Mk 6 with a VP30 ) , is bleed the injector lines. Hardly any crankage required, lift pump or not. :D
The first Mk 6 mechanical TDDI, giving electronics the finger, since April 2013

Perfection is reached, not when there's nothing left to add, but when there's nothing left to remove.

Also: lift pump has two valves. If valves are not worn-out, they prevents against fuel retreat during stoppage. Especially if fuel system beetween lift pump and iniectors is leaky.

This is my video.
Ford engineers know what they are doing. Without a booster pump at a low fuel level in the tank, starting the engine becomes a problem.
