only thing is I'm not very good with mechanics

Hi,

I am quite a noob about mechanics and did the change of starter (bought a big one a few days ago) by myself.

Believe me it is really easy ! If you wan't some kind of tutorial I can explain you.

It took me only 15minutes to switch starters.

Was probably more easy because I changed the lead of my wires a few days before.

Since I changed my starter and wires, my van has not difficulty to start !

Just prior to service time (oil/air/fuel filter change)
Also had a leaky leak off pipe and forgot to turn the side lights off the day before.
Left them on for a couple of hours or so after stopping the engine so the battery wasn't at it's best.

need to check the lights left on buzzer thing as it works when it feels like it.

Most likely suspect is the door switch.

Neighbours love me :D
Morning after it was just above freezing and had been below 0 degrees through the night.

Unlike VW I admit to doing my part for global warming.

After service and leak off sorted it's totally different.

This one fits on my Transit Mk5 even if it is supposed to be designed for Mk3 and Mk4.

Hi guys.
There are three options for a starter. Bosh 2.7 kW, Lucas / Magnetti-Marelli and gearbox Ford / Motocraft and similar 2.2 kW.
Mk3 and Mk4 on the Continent were equipped with Bosch starter 2.7 kw, Mk5 with Ford gearboxes and the like 2.2 kw.
Starter Lucas is a rarity.
I'm familiar with the hundreds of owners of Ford Transit and only one has a starter Lucas.
Perhaps the starter Lucas is common in the Isles?
Big starter Bosch was good until the cars were new.
I have repaired Bosch starters many times, they have a lot of problems.
The main problem: the closure of the winding of the rotor to the mass.
Another problem is the rapid wear of the sleeve in the body from the side of the bendix.
Another problem is the replacement of carbon brushes.
When I eliminated all the problems and replaced the bronze bushings with needle roller bearings, the motor started in the freezing cold -20 g C without heating and without a torch candle.
But my son has Mk5 with a small starter Ford 2.2 kW and its engine easily starts in winter.

Now I'm on my Mk3 I have no name starter 2.2 kw, not a very good battery and without a torch (torch candle) I start the engine at a temperature of -10 ° C.
The electric flare device starts working at a temperature of -5 ° C.
Up to this temperature, the engine starts easily, up to -10 you need to scroll for a few seconds.
If the temperature is below -10 and the electric flare device does not start, starting the motor becomes a problem.
But I do not have to go to such a frost.
My friend from the city of Brest in Belarus, having a working electro-flare device, started the engine at a temperature of -28 ° C.

The Bosch starter 2.7 kw has another drawback of design: the minus supply to the brush unit comes on the contact of aluminum and steel, pulled together by two M5 screws. All the starters that I repaired had contact points of the starter head and the brush block of destruction caused by electro erosion .
Such a starter does not develop enough power to start the engine in frost.

Today, I shot a short movie with the FT engine starting in the frost-7 or 8 gr C.
Instant start of the serviceable motor.

Just to illustrate how important fresh oil is to starting the DI on a cold day, my van was getting difficult to start on cold mornings and would turn over for maybe 10 seconds before firing up.

I changed the oil & filter yesterday and the old oil was a bit thick when it had cooled down. This morning my van was transformed and started first flick of the starter.

Happy days :D

Keef,I live in a place where there are cold days in winter.
-15 ...- 20 gr C is up to two weeks.
Below-20 happens very rarely.
On such days I do not use the car.
Fuel can freeze.
Before the beginning of winter, I always change the oil.
I use oil with a viscosity index of 5W30.
In addition, I always monitor the status of battery cells and if the temperature is expected to drop below -15 ° C I remove it from the car and connect the charger.
I use a battery with a capacity of 100 Ah.
In my video, you can see that the battery was disconnected.
After connecting the battery, the indicator showed a voltage of 12.9 Volts, which corresponds to the full battery charge.

Today, the frost was about -15 ...- 17 ° C, although the device in the car showed -20 ° C.
The instrument has an error.
Start the engine after 4 ... 5 seconds of the starter.
