Van wont start, does not even turn over

Postby toppetsaha » Sun Jan 18, 2015 7:20 pm

Hi all,

been working on the van all day today, got most off the list ticked off... last job was sorting out the headline & re aligning it, got that done & started the van up with no problems, went to pull off & it cut out. My first thoughts were oh s**t cambelt snapped! (happend on the escort van)

Tried turning the key & nothing happened, no clicks ect. The lights come up on the dash (battery & oil) but that is about it. I dont know if its the same on transits but im sure all lights dim when the starter tries to turn over the engine, which did not happen.

Second thoughts are it could be an imobilizer problem? the light just flashes at normal pace all of the time.

It might be worth saying that i have been messing about with the electrics all day, ive fitted a switch for the rear lights, side lights ect. (stalk failed)

Also as i pulled off alot of water from the roof came down the windcreen, ive had a quick look at the electrics & they all look ok.

Hopefully its an easy fix! got some spare time tomorrow & i wouldnt mine ticking off a few more bits :)
Van is a mk5 1997 chassis cab.

Nope didnt disconect any terminals during the work. Thinking about it though, the main 60amp fuse box next to the battery was encased in electrical tape, i removed all of the tape to check the fuses.

I would make sure all connections from battery to starter are good and tight then work from there

Mine did the same and all it was was a bad connection on the battery

Only found it by someone holding ignition to start on and I wiggled wires (carefully)

Will do that in the morning & post back the results.. Seems a little strange how it cut out, i use to take the battery off the other van when it was started & it never cut out :?

You might have dislodged or unplugged the ring around the ignition switch that picks up immobiliser chip in the key.

The immobiliser light should go out after a few seconds with the ignition on.

Hi, Put gear stick in neutral and put screwdriver across battery lead terminal of starter and onto solenoid ( 15 amp spade) terminal. If it don't crank problem is in starter!

problem was the fuse no.33, it had a 15amp fuse which was blown (i replaced it with a 15amp, panel does show 5amp) What does this fuse control? as the panel does not show anything.

Thanks everyone, a nice quick fix!

Fuse should only be a 5A, if it's blowing a 15A then you have an electrical problem somewhere :(

Those fuses power the immobiliser :)

Theres nothing worse than an electrical problem! :( i stuck another 15amp in there & took it out for a spin, seems ok now. That does make sense actually, by the looks of it black box has been chopped about in the past. i think ill just put the cover back over it & carry on..

Would fuel get to injectors if fuel filter is knackered?
