electronic throttle pedal (drive by wire)

Postby modman » Mon Apr 20, 2015 4:40 pm

Hi, I am concerned about my trannys throttle and epic fuel pump after someone I heard about had a problem with their pedal and were told they were up the creek as not available now. Obviously I would try breakers yards but then the lucas fuel pump seems to be hated with a vengeance and has got me worried about the systems reliability now! I have a 99 2.5Tdi with only 41k on the clock - should I just get rid of the van before it goes wrong or am I panicking for no reason?

how likely am i to get stuck with a lump of metal that wont go anymore?

I know there are some very clever guys on this forum who will be laughing at this but I am one of lifes worriers and just keep thinking of getting stuck way out in the sticks with it!

cheers

If you do need a pedal i have one ( a genuine ford ) which is not very old, let me know if you need it.

The epic system is actually very reliable but they are difficult to diagnose (without the correct equipment).

Pedals rarely fail - but there are 2 types (late and early)
Lucas Laser 2000 & IDS
95 M Prototype/Mule DRW 100PS Highcube
95 N Hallmark (white)
96 P 150 TD 100PS LWB Hi-Top
96 P Autosleeper Duetto
2 x 2006 Mk7s

Hi, thanks for replies - the offer of a pedal as a spare part sounds like a good idea - my van is the 100td on a `V` plate (Autosleeper Duetto). I thought the earlier ones just had a cable throttle - didnt know there were two drive by wire pedals for these vans! My pump is definitely a lucas pump and its nice to hear something positive about it as it has had a good slagging on this very forum. I saw one guy who had his pack up at 38k - I would have felt happier if all the issues were with high milers as mine only has 41k.

If you have the right [pedal, how much would you want for it? - I am also looking for a barrel transponder for the pats as it plays up on occasions and I think it is the lilely culprit?

dont knmow if they canbe swapped around without coding issues though

cheers

Mk4 use a cable to a potentiometer under the bonnet.

Early mk5 use a pedal with 2 plugs

Late mk5 use a pedal with a single plug.

My P reg has 180 something thousand miles on it with the EPIC system and I'm not planning on changing it.

If the worst comes to the worst you can swap to a non ECU controlled injection pump. I have done this for a few people on the forum for less than you would think (doesn't work properly with an automatic gearbox)

If anyone is stuck, i removed a good pedal from my epic with 10k miles on it, so i presume it will be ok.

Hi, and thanks for your help and advice. I am afraid that I have now sold the van to a dealer as am worried that the thing would pack up on me out in the middle of nowhere only to be told it cant be fixed like the poor couple it happened to on AS forum. Dont know if they are sorted yet but posted them about manual conversion. My van had some minor rust issues to deal with and a bit underneath which I was happy to sort but then saw all the negative opinions on the epic pump and no one in my area knows how to do the manual changeover and I contacted so called fuel injection specialists!
