lucas epic to bosch fuel pump conversion

Postby MICKYMOOR » Tue Jun 30, 2015 1:59 pm

Hi
Can somebody explain in detail how changing from a epic to a Bosch pump can work on a 2.5 TDI , is there a loss of power or less mpg.my van is a 3.5 ton coach built motorhome so need my power and mpg to be good.
I have been told it cannot work but have heard a lot of you guys on here saying you have done it , if there is any risk I cannot afford to risk my van with it.
Is the Bosch pump a modified banana pump or off another vehicle.
Regards

100% absolutely works. I have personally done a couple of conversions and know several others who have done them or had them done.

Bosch is noiser, but when setup correctly has more low down grunt, loses it slightly at the top end though.

I find my bosch turbo has less mpg than my epic one... but that may be because of the state of tune its in. Plenty of others report increased mpg.

Bosch can be taken directly of any smiley transit but late 76ps (686-2 and 686-3) need the least fiddling with.

In addition to physically swapping the pump a throttle cable and pedal needs fitting (standard parts). The injector pipes can be swapped for bosch ones or just bent slightly.

You will need to adjust the fuelling screws (2 off) and the tickover screws and fiddle with the pump timing (this could be done before pump fitting using a DTI).

Other than an increase in noise there is no real downside to bosching. (I'm keeping mine epic to learn about the system)

URGENT! Can anyone advise me where to look for a Bosch (or similar) FUEL PUMP conversion kit please? I have a 2000 LDV Convoy (Transit main parts) that now needs a replacement pre-electronic fuel pump after ongoing EML into Limp Mode issue. The ECU has tested as fully working but will not allow any diagnostic machine to erase the fault codes it came up with despite 'faults' being sorted (new sensors within electronic Lucas Epic pump). So my mechanic has asked ME to source this conversion kit! I can use it locally for work but need to be able to drive long distance without causing major hold ups on main roads!

There's no " Kit " as you call it, you need a pump, a pedal & cable & your good to go, change the cam belt & water pump at the same time.

If not using the correct Lucas (Laser 2000) or Ford (FDS) reader, it's quite possible all that was actually wrong with it was the need for a new cambelt and timing properly.....

Not sure of type of diagnostic machine was used but had 3 different places seeing to it at various stages.
The actual fault diagnosis of the 1174 & 1176 fuel pump cam sensors was made by Auto Marine Diesel of Hove, who do have the big machinery to do this. And from this, one of my guys found those sensors and thought he'd fixed it, and he changed the cam belt, other belts and fuel filter on my request (low mileage on my LDV). Water pump was done about four years ago at huge expense as not available anymore, had to buy recon option. He was the one who could 'find' my LDV on his small machine but couldn't erase the fault codes despite being apparently fixed. So maybe I should try Auto Marine again to see if it is just the diagnostic machine that is causing the current issue, not wiping the error clear.
Then due to water ingress from windscreen seal it seemed possible that the ECU could be faulty as it had white residue on it, but on sending it to Tamar in Cornwall, main test unit for LDV's ECU's for years apparently, it came back as 'not faulty'. Back to square one!
The first time the Engine Management Light came on last August I called the AA and the guestimate was the EGR valve... from there my then garage told me they couldn't find one so just sell the vehicle! Which I nearly did for a grand sum of £450 but people were keen to fix it themselves so I thought it was obviously possible I could do just that.
Well I got on the Live-in Vehicle forum and was advised to block it off - which I got my garage to do. Problem continued. ....

It may seem daft to continue but I just cant afford to 'give' this crew bus away after many years of being exactly what I need in a vehicle, and spending a lot to keep it going. It was ex-MOD so very low usage and I've already bought and sold a Merc Vito, and now stuck with a lovely but very old ex-MOD Landie that wont do for the long distance European drives I also need it for, cant get my money back. Ongoing dilemma.
I will be calling the person who posted their phone number next week, many thanks.

Surely the water pump would have been a Ford DI one? Approx £30 from e**y with gasket.

'EGR valve' is the current 'cure all' diesel ailment, rough translation is 'f*** if I know mate'.

I'm faced with this exact problem since having to abort a tour to Estonia. Unfortunately the engine management light came on when in Belgium so i got no further and my breakdown insurance insisted on repatriating the van back to UK. The local Garage i use have had the pump tested (mechanics fine electronics not) and been told by the Diesel specialist they use that they know someone locally has converted Bosch pumps to run in the TDi engine. Just waiting to get his contact number now.

A "normal" bosch pump bolts on and works fine, people have been doing it for ages

but Dieselhead123/AndyPDQ have just started doing converted ones with boost sensing tops on 8)
