Front spring hanger repair

Postby MinorMatt » Sun Jun 12, 2016 3:56 pm

Has anyone here actually fitted a new front spring hanger to a mk5?

We all know that the panels available are mk3 - but i have just found out they won't fit my van correctly.

The mk5 chassis is straight and goes up to, and welds to, the front crossmember, wheres the mk3 doesn't. The spring hangers that are available all have a"kink" where the chassis stops on a mk3 and this does not work with a mk5 chassis!

Needless to say the van is now in bits and I will have to put something back!! Not sure quite what I am going to do yet!

Do you mean this one (click on the pics for full size, not 100% on resizing them)
Image
I fitted one from central panels last year
Absolute B and a half to get the remains of the old one off

I just trimmed back the top so it would fit up into position on the chassis rail properly
You will also find the mounting holes for the bolt are also too big

On the mk5 there is a piece on either side like a large washer, I salvaged these from the old one and transferred them to the new panel

Everything lines up where it should (I'm a touch ocd about that)
Left the welds showing and was straight up with the tester and had no problems getting a fresh ticket

Yes one of them...

The mk5 hanger doesn't have the returns on the top flange or the ones at the side either.

I'm probably going to unpick the repair panel and remake it to be correct for mk5

He says he fitted one from central panels - if that's the one in the picture or not I don't know.

The one I fitted was from central panels but I've just checked their site and the item picture has been updated.
The new item pic looks much more correct for the later independent front you can see the lack of a return lip on the upper edge and the addition of the wshers where the bolt goes through
These were always a problem part as I'm sure you can pick up from the discussion when fitting with independent front end.
I'd contact central panels directly and clarify.

Or I'm sure it could be modified to fit with a little work

Hi all,
I finally found/brought the leaf spring brackets for my horsebox/ford transit,
But the problem i now have is finsing sum1 to change them!
Im in lyne, surrey (nr woking)
Ive had lots of quotes but keep being let down wen it comes to actually doing the work
Does ne1 know of ne1 that can change the brackets over
Cut old ones off & weld new ones on
I dont have the confidence to attempt it myself
(Havent welded in 10yrs & never done nething structural)
I desperately need them doing
Can ne1 help me find ne1 that can do the work?
Please
Thank you

Hi, Cutecub.x.
Replacing the central panel is not a problem for me, but I live very far away from you.

We could not find the central panel and had to sculpt from pieces.

That's what happened as a result.
In my country there is no MOT.

The welded seams were cleaned by the owner of the machine, she applied and cleaned the putty and painted over the repair area.
