clutch nice and light as compared to the old one.
no leaks evident in the bellhousing/under the van :D

on the down side :(

resealed the diff inspection plate.(it's been weeping for ages)
took the plate off and
stuck my gloved hand in to scoop as much of the old smelly oil out and came
across this.(not the £2 coin)

chunk off the pinion
bearing had a bit (a lot) of play so I adjusted it and took it out for a test run.
No vibration or clunking.
could it have been like this for the 2 years i've had the van?

next question......
Are the pinion and crown wheel machined as a pair?
or
can i just buy a pinion to match the diff ratio?
and............
how to set pre load at home

on a plus it's not neds Tdci

Like a pair of boobs they should be matching :)
On the sixth day God created a Sprinter on the seventh he gave it away and bought a TRANSIT

Cheers, yeah I found that already. There's no way that panel that is there could be patched effectively. The labour to patch it outweighs the cost of that panel!

So unless the guy who is welding it can source it more cheaply it will probably be one of those ...

The labour to replace it will be intense. Might be worth taking a day off to remove it as that would be a large part of the cost ... I understand you have to use some kind of flat fronted drill bit to drill out the spot welds, once you've guessed where they are ...

And of course, once THAT is up he's bound to find things wrong with the chassis :(

On the bright side, the floor panel in the middle is in good shape :P

The coachbuilder blames the floor for being badly fitted (just screwed on ply) and causing moisture to get trapped.

I may have to pop over to the campervan forum once I get it back to get advice on how to do a proper floor and avoid this ...

Crownwheel and pinions are a matched pair.

If the diff isn't doing anything worse than whining (i.e. knocking/banging/graunching) put the cover back on and it will probably be fine.

I was selling a fridge today and just to make a little more space for the buyer's trailer to get in I needed to move the Transit.
Not a feccin' chance. Up to its old tricks of just going "click" and nothing else happening. I figured maybe its because I haven't started it for a couple of days (4?) so stuck the fast charger on it for a couple of hours. No go. Even with "Start/boost" it would only just "click". If someone is passing through the SW of France and wants to make me an offer I'm certainly in the mood. Bring a trailer.

He turns out to be a liar :P. When I phone up, not only is this 'in stock' item not in stock, the supplier he gets it from doesn't do it anymore :P

At least he's deleted it from the website now.

So, patches it is :(

1 slice of either brown or white bread will do(I tried with both)

Use a hammer and something that is a reasonable fit in the centre of the bearing
to act as a drift.In my case a 4lb hammer and a 1/2" drive T bar.
stuff the hole and then use the hammer and "drift" to compress the bread.
keep stuffing the hole and compressing the bread until enough pressure is created to pop the bearing out.

don't forget to gouge the bread out before fitting the new bearing

Nasty bearing out and new 1 fitted in under 10 minutes :D

I've been told it works with thick grease as well (the drift would need to be a good fit though)

It doesn't need to be a good fit as AvE, one of the Youtubers I follow, shows. You just need to use some rags to give it a hand.

Ironically....

It's not whining/banging etc.
although sat at the computer looking at a piece of metal that should be in the diff housing is disturbing

On a plus note.

crank seal is sealing.
and new clutch is much lighter on calf muscle :D

I miss driving mine.

But the coachbuilder fixing it tells me, the fact the body was not attached to the chassis on one side is probably why it handled like a sack of sh*t.

Went to have a look at it today. Wow I'm impressed. He has not only fabricated up the rotten floor sections, he built a wheel arch from scratch.

Might get it back in another week or two ...
