Struggling with Rear Brake Drum Removal 190 15" Single Wheel

Postby jimllshiftit » Thu Aug 04, 2016 12:07 pm

Just trying to overhaul my brakes but just can't get the drums off.

Its a 1997 190 15" single wheel six stud back axle. The brake pipes are off so there is no pressure in the cylinders. Ive managed to push the O/S pads off the drum and the hub now turns freely but one shoe on the N/S is binding on the drum so much so that ive now bent the shoe backing leaving the braking material stuck to the drum. Although I've managed to push the other brake shoe off the drum, needless to say, the N/S hub does not turn at all and neither drum wants to come off regardless of how many hammer blows I can give it.

Any advice appreciated.

the dums sound very worn to me so you will have a lip on the inside of the drum so they will be difficult to get off

use big bars and patience they will come of but eventually and things will get damaged as well

If the drums are that bad is it possible to smash them off?

I had this problem last year. I had a pair of new drums so I wasn't worried about damaging the old ones. I spent half a day bashing them with a sledgehammer and they wouldn't budge. The issue was more to do with the hole in the drums that locate on the axle hub being rusted on and refusing to budge. In the end I jacked up the axle and lowered it to the ground letting the drum hit the ground hard. That broke the seal of drum to hub. Then it was just a case of waggling it off past the ridge that karl mentioned.

Piece o' piddle when you aren't afraid of damaging anything.

Using the biggest sledge hammer I could find the drums fell off. The wear lip is not bad at all so it must have been as Aardvark suggested.

Another job fixed thanks to the Transit forum, well done.

Now to figure out the spongy brake pedal and uneven wear on the front discs...........

Have you tried releasing the self adjuster mechanism?
There is a hole in the backing plate that you can push a screw driver through to release the cam.
Just a thought before you smash anything off. ;-)
I had the same problem. Spent hours with crow bars and hammers before i realised this.

Remove the half shaft undo nuts remove washer and bearing then bolt the half back on the wrong way round so you can use it as a lever move shaft op and down or Side to side and pull at the same time this is assuming it’s a fully floating axle and the shaft is held on with six nuts or bolts then you can press the hubs on h g v s and p s v s with knockout wheel studs we some times knock out the studs to make it easier to separate them when the vehicle

Seen this method used on a twin wheeler & it rips the hold downs etc out, lot easier to deadjust the brakes through the back plate, deadjust handbrake etc & dont forget to mark the wheel to drum to hub (elimates brake judder)

Yes on a transit it does rip out the holding springs but it’s good practice to replace all the springs on a reline on vehicle of this age

And it's useful to grind off the lip in the drum every time you take it off (5" Sanding Flap Disc in the Angle Grinder) to avoid this happening next time, 'bout 5 mins. of work.
