Smartening up wheelnuts

Postby ColinJack » Sun Jan 15, 2017 9:48 pm

Looking to have the steel wheels on my van powder coated - but that will mean the rusty old wheel nuts will also need smartening up!
Should I just spend some time with wire brush and then prime and paint or is there a better way?

That was one idea I had - or black ones. Bit of a pain when I need to remove them though.

What about sandblasting each one with those small recirculating spot blasters that go on a compressor.
Would they just go rusty again quick?
I'm in the same situation, that IL have nice new wheels and cruddy nuts.so to speak.

I think it priced around 150 to 200 pounds for new nuts from ford.

Consider yourself lucky. If you had a six-lug `15" wheels you can't even find nut covers at all. Oops. I'm telling porkies. There is a source in the states that has them in the right size but refuses to send outside the USA.

No worries.
The covers in your link say they are 17mm. That's probably fine for all the 5-stud Transits but the 6-stud ones are 24mm (if I remember correctly).
Powder coating your wheels will look fine. I would like to do mine as well. In black and then finish off with a stainless ring snapped into the outer edge like the 50's-60's look. VW rings might fit but I haven't had a chance to try them.

Mine is a 6-stud one, so yes has the 24mm nuts. The van is dark grey, so going for dark silver coating on the wheels... where would you get a stainless ring? Sounds like a smart idea.

They are called "beauty rings" in the states but probably called something else in UK. Some here on ebay (uk)http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/15-Beauty-Rin ... SwF1dUN7gT.
Make sure there is enough width to fit them. Some are up to 3" wide so would not fit the 6-bolt Transit wheel.
