master Cylinder help

Postby Geoff Dyson » Sun Feb 12, 2017 9:23 pm

Hi all, I'm trying to help the old guy who lives near to me, he owns a 1988 F Reg transit campervan with no or very little brakes which we narrowed down to a faulty Master cylinder. No problem I say's "will Get an replacement from E Bay a quick bleed up and then its off to for the mot and your back on the road."

Shorten a long tale, A specialist in london replies "go to a breaker yard I don't keep stock that old"!!!. So Armed with the Reg Number and Chassis Number I then spend over a week of texting Emailing on the phone to locate a replacement Cylinder (yes I know its a mine field of possible's that could have been fitted) I locate one that's not a perfect mach on the reservoir fitment but looks 99.9 Percent a match, Sadly the reservoir is out by 2/3mm in length and the bore is to large for the old one to fit
So I need your knowledge and assistance in locating a Master Cylinder for this vehicle. I don't know the make of the Cylinder (IE lockheed bendix or girling), but I can say it has 3 outlets pipes 2 on the side & one just below the front outlet. The plastic reservoir has two inlet caps one with level indicator rearward and it is secured to the main body of the cast metal cylinder via 2 phillips headed screws. I have found several lookalikes online and in pictures but they only have 2 pipe outlets
Can anyone help in the make of this Cyl or a replacement part number's to give to parts suppliers for them to try and match up something to fit. It's that bad have been asking them to look at 2.8 Ford granada/sierra or suchlike that may fit & give him a stronger brake pedal and get this old boy back moblie again but again no luck so Any help in locating a cylinder or knowledge of new or even a pre loved in good working order greatly received
Thanks in advance for your time and Help
Thanks again Geoff

There are some good Transit brains here on the forum Geoff :)
I think it would help if you post foto's of the old masterpomp 8)
I suppose, If you could find a name on it, that would be a great help to.
What makes you so sure it is the pump?

Hi managed to get a picture hope it works out ok and you can understand the type/make a little better than my novice description, two outlets towards the passenger side the other below the first & two screw that hold the plastic reservoir
We changed it following a description from this site about " if you stand on the pedal there fine but pressing normally or slowly the pedal sinks to the floor" first stage master cylinder brake fault?? also when i removed it there was a small amount fluid leaking back past the rubber O ring to the rear near the circlip
We would like to replace the whole cylinder for new but if there as elusive to find as the Dodo we would consider a good second hand or a seal kit as the last resort as the old boy says he had one fitted the last time this happened, A couple of years back by a local garage guess the bore has been damaged or the seals have perished.

He now has informed me that the van is a 1988 F Reg 2.0 petrol camper he had a problem finding the correct rear shoes that are shown in a parts manual for the vehicle and they had to fit Cortina 2.3 rear shoes instead?? but he's getting on a little and may be incorrect on that fact
any help welcomed & positive guidance received or if the post needs to be moved into a technical section could the powers that be move it to a better location
Thanks again Geoff

Sorry Geoff
When I mentioned there are good Transit brains here on the forum, I was NOT referencing to myself
To find the replacement part, have you googled MOTOMOBIL, they have a wide assortiment of brake parts!
Good luck

Try phoning this lot:

link to an older thread

Never used them myself but they might be worth a try.

Or find someone who's Polish and get them to search in Polish for it. That's where most of the old Trannys seem to end up :P

I've got a new Ford one here (which I don't want to sell) and the part number on the box is 80VB2A032GA & 6083871 which I assume is the finis code. Might help you find one?

... so ... what about soldering in a 12 to 10 mm reducer somewhere in the pipework?

That could be an option if the only master cyls you can find are 12mm variants.

There are numerous variants of master cylinder with different size fixings...

Most are the same just with different size fittings... so just cut the old one off put a new tube bolt on and flare...

Peter Lee of the transit van club was selling a couple of NOS mk3 ford master cyls last year - he may still have one

Another option... if you find a 2 port one is to join the 2 front pipes with a T... its effectively the same as 2 ports from the MC and is whats done on late mk5s
