Just bought a 1989 MK3 2.5D

Postby jaycey001 » Tue Feb 21, 2017 9:28 pm

Hi everyone

I have just bought a 1989 motorhome with a genuine 40k on the clock which was imported from Italy a few years ago - its all solid and in nice condition but I would like some more info on the engine!
Its a 1989 Ford Transit 2.5D (I think) non turbo, the gear box has reverse above 1st if that is of any significance?

Previously I have owned a P reg transit with the Banana engine in and it was perfect, but the engine in the motorhome is not a Banana and has the air filter sitting on top of the engine, is it an early form of the banana?

What should i be looking out for on this engine, are there any common problems I need to be aware of? I am going to get it fully serviced and cambelt changed asap but I want it to be 100% mechanically as I will be driving to southern Spain in the summer with the kids and the dog on board (oh and the wife!)

I would be really greatfull of more info on it and what i should expect from it in terms of reliability etc...

I am fairly capable mechanically but like to avoid problems if possible :)

Many thanks
James

sounds like an earler di.

post a pic for a more definate answer

should be good for at least another 200,000 miles with regular servicing :D
ne m'écoute pas je suis plein de merde.
A house without a dog is like a forum without a BJT.
Too bloody quiet

Hi

Thanks - this is the engine, is it an early DI?

It's a D.I.
Looks like the correct one for a '89 van,as it left factory.(Lucas C.A.V injection equipment)
About 70 bhp and fairly simple and bombproof.
Usual service stuff to keep it reliable,do the valve clearances, check throttle is getting full travel, for best performance without messing with fuel pump.

Thanks for confirming - I will add valve clearances and throttle travel to the list :)
Pleased to hear it should be a solid lump and up to the spanish trip (and back!)

Thanks!
