FORD TRANSIT CAMPER VAN 2.0 PINTO COLD START

Postby lukeh6n2 » Sun Mar 05, 2017 10:38 pm

hi guys

recently bought a 2.0 G reg ford transit camper van but having a few issues starting from cold.

it does start but requires you to hold the revs for a minute or so then it will idle ok

she does backfire if you let revs off and does cut out right away

what should i be looking for?

on a G reg does it run unleaded or leaded fuel?

hope someone can help

thanks

quick answer is a diesel conversion ..... or someone to buy the thing so you can buy a diesel one.

longer answere
last one i had was an 80ish mk 2
where to start.... either ignition system or air fuel , get a haynes manual...
clean all the ignition system componants, replace spark plugs and leads with new, does it have a distributor with points that need replacing?,
replace air filter, clean carb or get a new one with a manual choke.

about normal service for an auto choke vv carb...starts, chugs, ease revs up then just about idle..then as warms settles to fast idle

you could reduce auto choke setting or put a manual choke weber ich34 on 8)

G might be crossover re petrol, look for engine number at rear of block by exhaust manifold...from memory think you lookin NAT for unleaded, don't rely on that...
I had a list somewhere, will try and look later

Today I had an hour of free time so have had a play
Have fitted a new set of spark plugs seems a bit better but still a bugger to start from cold
See this video with the backfire

https://youtu.be/8_8czMUmOZY

As your see at the start a big puff by the exhaust manifold have seen a big leak so new gaskets ordered from ecp to fit them tomorrow to eliminate any exhaust leaks

Unsure what else to do?

just looked again and saw the flame out of the carby just confirms my thoughts to far advanced need a manual as to correct setting and which way to move the distributor or maybe timing belt wear try timing the distributor first :)
