Propshaft woes, mk5 150 swb

Postby Tee-bob » Thu Apr 06, 2017 6:18 pm

Hi all. I was driving along yesterday when the rear section of my propshaft came away and dug into the ground. Luckily I was only going approx. 15mph at the time but it still scared the **** out of me! Anyway, managed to get it to my mechanic on a flat bed and he set about sorting the problem for me. I had a transit 80 swb before this one and we stripped all the parts off it before it went for scrap. We were hoping to just swap the props over but they appear to be different lengths. (About forty mm difference!) he's manged to bolt the old one back up using the stuff off the 80 model one but there's a terrible vibration at anything above forty mph. Got it jacked up and you can see that the prop is bent, probably from digging in the road!

My questions are as follows...

1.If I have a mk5 swb 150 do I need a prop for a swb 150 or are there any others that will fit?

2. Has anybody got one for sale?

Many thanks in advance, Tom.

I know the problems you can have with propshafts back when a dealership had parts in stock the only way to get the correct prop was to take the prop with you I have had as many as 5 on thee counter and sill not had the correct one

A good prop repair shop will be able to rebuild/retube your shaft. I've used one in Salford and one in Holmes Chapel, google propshaft repairs.

I wish you'd all reveal at least the town or county where you reside, be so much easier.

If you have a 6 stud rear axle then the diff would be different to the one on a 5 stud 80 swb

Thanks everyone for your help so far. I'll look into getting it repaired if I have no joy but I'm still hoping to get one for it as I use the van for work. If you do have one B4ndit then I'll definitely be interested in buying it off of you.

With regards to the repair option and my location, I'm in Leicestershire if anyone knows somewhere this way to recommend? Anyone know from experience what sort of timescale I'd be looking at?

Again, thanks all. Wish I'd known about this forum before, an absolute wealth of information here!!

Just a quick update for you all. We've put a new uj on the back of the prop and all seems to be well! Many thanks to everyone for their help and advice. I'll also be keeping an eye out for a spare one so I'm covered in the future.
