Mk3 Security

Postby ColinJack » Sun Apr 09, 2017 6:09 pm

As we all know, the locks on the Mk3 are easy to pick. I am getting increasingly paranoid about my camper, especially as we quite often park up in Europe and go walking - what would be the best way to improve security?

I use a full steering covering dislock
It will in large size with a squeeze go onto a thick rim mk5 wheel and is a fairly good deterrent and very visible to hopefully mean the scum won't break in preventing damage whether they can get it started or not
Only down side is it is big and hard to store when driving but it's better than some scum bag taking your camper 8)

We've got a a full steering wheel disklok for our mk5 camper, it lives strapped to a mini bulkhead behind the driver's seat along with a set of snow chains. I'll post a pic when I get home from work (in France, in the mk7).

Get an alarm too, a decent one with switchable ultrasonics. Make sure the warning LED is obvious.

got a padlock. slide seat up to steering wheel. drill holes threw runner, put padlock threw holes in runner, thinking if you can't get your feet on the peddles you can't drive it. got an imobiliser and an alarm as well.

It needs to be it, has to fit around a mk5's steering wheel.

Do you know, is that the same size if you don't have power steering and what size of Disklok is it? :)

The mk5's steering wheel is 43cm across 3.7cm deep (17" x 1.5"). How that compares to an airbag mk5 or mk3 steering wheel I couldn't tell you.

The Disklok is a Large, which fits 41.5cm to 44cm, but as the steering wheel is quite thick it's a close fit, if it was any bigger it wouldn't fit at all.

Info about the Disklok can be found on their website at disklokuk.co.uk, we bought ours on Amazon as at the time it was cheaper to do so.

Fitted a solenoid on the diesel supply - works a treat! Forgot to switch it on ... got about half a mile!

I put the steering wheel from my MK5 onto my MK3, they are the same diameter, but the MK5 is thicker. I have a crook lock 'stick', which works well on my MK5 steering wheel, but not so well on the MK3.

Fit a battery kill switch, like the rally drivers do, when you park up hide the red switch, or take it with you. If you hide the switch location, its even better.

Buy a dog.

Them "stick type" steering locks are useless  all they do is provide a visual deterrent, about 30 seconds with a hacksaw and the steering wheel is cut bent and the lock removed then bend the steering rim back into place quick couple of wraps of black insulation tape and you would hardly no it was stolen :x
The only type that's any good is the complete steering cover type mentioned here or a very similar design.
That's what I use myself on my mk5, it is a tight fit on the wheel but I find if you turn the wheel 90 degrees it fits much easier.

yeah, a visual deterrent is as much as i can hope for, though I might mess about with a hardened steel tube to put over the wheel also (only where the crook lock fits)...(the Mk5 wheel is better for this)

I agree the entire wheel covers are better.

The battery isolation switch can be over-ridden..

a van with a full wheel cover can be towed away..

i didnt fit decent locks as its a few seconds with a stanley knife to get in through the windows of my ex-ambulance..
