Loud clunk driving over high bump mk4 2.5DI 100

Postby jair33 » Thu Apr 13, 2017 1:35 pm

Hello all,

I was wondering if you could help me diagnose a sound..

Whenever I drive over a really high bump (it is only this bump it does this) I can hear a loud clunk noise coming from I think the left front side. It is especially loud when I turn right while coming off the bump. I only hear this on this bump, not regular bumps. Is it a ball joint, or rather inner/ outer tie rods? Or something else? At first glance the rubbers of the outer tie rod seem worn, but I'm not sure. Also, nothing was remarked on the ball joint during the MOT test (in Holland), which they should if they feel to much play.

Thanks!

jack the van up so the wheel's off the floor.
Use a long bar under the tyre (6 o'clock position) and try to lift the wheel.
This will show any play in the bottom ball joint.

also grab the wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock and try to move it from side to side.
track/tie rod end check.

grab wheel 12 and 6 o'clock and check for wheel bearing movement while you're at it.

could also be anti roll bar bushes
damper/shock absorber.
broken spring..
ne m'écoute pas je suis plein de merde.
A house without a dog is like a forum without a BJT.
Too bloody quiet

Could be that someone forgot to fit the brake pad clips during last service, that will cause a knocking over bumps.

It can't go anywhere, mk4 has IFS and the spring would have to halve in size to fall out.

Thanks all for the replies, I will try to get at it this weekend.

I think it is only minor since I can only hear the clunck at really a few bumps, so it might be relatively hard for me to notice. Next to checking the joints/ tie rod/ bearing, how can I check the damper? I've never noticed the camper "shaking" to much after stepping in or so (which I think is one phenomenon that indicates worn dampers?).

The coil spring (IFS) sits in a rubber mount @ the top, it used to be common for the mount to become displaced causing the (IFS) coil spring to hit the crossmember causing a knocking noise, one way round this apart from replacing the rubber is to refit the spring & cable tie it to the rubber mount, this is relevant to a IFS mk4/5

That's more like it! now we now what you mean. From your first post it reads as if the coil could dislodge from its housing.

After checking it myself, and having had the garage check since I was changing the front tires anyway, we could find anything wrong with any of the joints/ dampers/ spring so decided to leave it. It really only makes the sound at this one bump, nowhere else so I guess it will be fine..
