MK5 Transit 190 Turbo Diesel Diff Ratio

Postby aussieboy » Sun Apr 16, 2017 1:14 pm

I have a couple of Cab Chassis 190 2.5 Turbo Diesels, twin rear wheel model with the 5.11 diff ratio fitted from new -which i find causes too many revs and also additional fuel used when driving at about 70mph/110kph and with a lot of long distance driving planned i would really like to address this if I can. what are the other options available to me to reduce the revs at speed ? if I change the diff does anyone know which speedo drive is also required and lastly which model Transit is a different ratio diff fitted too for me to source a second hand unit from ? Thanks in advance

It has to be off a 6 stud axel and unless you get it professionally fitted needs to be a complete axel change, you can fit the diff from a single rear wheel to your axel but it is really a professional job to set it up correctly.
The diff you have will be 5.14 the only lower ratio diff available for your 6 stud is 4.63 and over here pretty hard to get as most were the same as yours a 5.14 ratio for pulling the extra load of the six stud is allowed to pull.

Try looking for minibus axles.

I believe some of the early Mk6 RWD models used the same axle.

Yes, you can get them from transit parts uk.

I got a 4.63 from a tipper in a scrappy and then when I was getting my gearbox rebuilt I got them to change out the 5th gear from a 0.82 to a 0.75 (Scorpio mt75)
The change from 5.14 to 4.63 got me from 3600rpm @ 70mph to 3250rpm. Then the 5th gear got it down to 3000rpm @ 70mph. Or to put it another way, like having a 4.21 CW&P. I am convinced that other CW&P's are out there that will fit but never had the money to try.
One gearbox and axle guy I spoke to said that some 4x4 county's had a 4.11 made for the 6 stud axle but I have never seen one.

I found the 22 tooth yellow speedo gear gave me a perfect reading identical to the satnav. 22 tooth Yellow gear number 7230066 (for electronic speedo)

Not strong enough its a Turbo, n/a di s used to kill them . Wrong.
Drivers and duff solenoids used to kill them, they don't like reverse. The J type in mine easily handles the TDi. Quite easy to fit.

If the Solenoid fails 99% of times the overdrive wont engage, occasionally it would be stuck in overdrive but very rare for this to happen.

They used to be fitted with inhibitor switches which prevented overdrive being selected in reverse. One sign of the overdrive failing was when you reversed it felt like you had clutch slip :o They didnt give as much trouble in the 2.0 or 3.0 v6 petrol

Thanks for the link to your post MFR - gives me a few part numbers to try - my cab chassis has 185/15 fitted at present (original size) but I am switching to 195/15 8 plys as they are easy to get here and way cheaper too

No worries, hope you get the right one. Living near the A9 with its average speed cameras you soon make lots of enemies driving at 45mph so I thought it was best to get as close the the real 50mph as possible. Although you still get trucks behind wanting to do 60mph
