Mk5 PATS Problem

Postby GavinRogers » Sun Apr 16, 2017 4:47 pm

Hi,

This is my first post on here, but I've been registered for a few years, reading the advice to help keep my Transit on the road.

I've had my Transit for 6 years now and last year had an intermittent PATS problem, which fixed itself before I got too concerned
But the last 2 days it's been playing up again so I need to do something about it

Turn the ignition and the light flashes quickly, ending up with a Code 14 - partial key code received (faulty or obscured key)
Turn it off and on again, and still the same, and also the same with the spare key
Leave it for a few minutes and come back, and it'll start first time

Drive somewhere, turn it off and you have to go through the same process again, so I'm worried I'm going to get stuck somewhere!

It's an October 1996 2.5di with 312,000 miles so I assume the PATS module it starting to play up
Any suggestions of what to check for this code, or how to bypass the PATS if I get stuck by the side of the road

I don't use it much, about 5k a year, but will be needing it next weekend

Thanks

Gavin Rogers

Is it a Turbo or non turbo?

The favourite for your issue is wiring... take the cowl off around the key and look at the connections on the green Plug as a start.

Your van was built in May 96, and took 5 months to register (for some reason) I will PM you some useful info

Hi,

It's a non-turbo - thanks for the PM
No idea of it's history before I bought it, but was well bodged at some point!

Thanks

So I didn't bypass the PATS - after accessing the module I found the wiring plug connections were corroded, so I cleaned these with some contact cleaner and an old toothbrush
Since then it has been reliable and I will leave it all connected :D

Thanks
