MK 5 rear brake compensator

Postby ellabbs » Sun Apr 16, 2017 7:21 pm

Hi Guys and Galls

ive got a 1998 smiley, and just noticed a pool of brake fluid under the brake compensator that thing bolted to the chassis that the brake pipe goes into ... the thing with the big lever and spring..

1, what do i get to repair it..

2, is it possible i could just bypass this entirely and put the pipe direct to the rear splitter.

i dont very often have more than 1/2 a ton in ..

thanks in advance for your wise replies..

and happy easter everyone..

Andy

I think Fraud still sell them, but they are about £900 :(

Someone on here did what you suggested and bypassed it with a fixed valve, after getting permission from their insurers and all sorts.

It failed the MOT; in the MOT manual it says failure criteria include a load compensating device bypassed or not present when it is normally known to be present. So, that's out too.

fitted fixed valve after agreement with insurance as its camper...drives better than ever, really fine adjustment on Wilwood valve

However van safer than ever and still no MOT...they can't deal with it ffs

so after quote of nearly £700 for recon from Germany and they refuse to sell kit  I have mine apart, traced it as a Lockheed part, Northwest classic looking for seals.

If you remove, undo at pivot leaving long spring fixed to axle or you're in for hgv style setup fun

I will post a how to rebuild if I get sorted :|

(Mine is late mk3 variant...fair amout of mk2 and mk5 on ebay btw)

Are they at you under 3.6 E 2?
Method of Inspection: "Check that a load sensing valve is present and connected, if it is a standard item."
Reason for Rejection: "Evidence that a load sensing valve has been removed or disconnected from a vehicle where it is known to have been fitted as standard."

yes, can't bypass or alter...
below is for mk3 valve so go to motor mobil check if the same tho different weights/springs...

meaning to do how to, never find the time....
eventually found bloke called John Devis, very helpful at second company 920E, I think to take over Lockheed...he has the all important seals and boots except lower ring which you can get in epdm from hydraulics place, or I could post as had to buy 10.
parts needed from
John Devis (Msc) | Customer Service & Logistics Manager
Liberty Vehicle Technologies
A Division of Liberty Commodities Limited
D: +44 1926 359 642
E: john.devis@920e.co.uk

I mentioned I would put this on forum one day and he's happy to help 8) here's what you need from John
cup seal 3871-501

boot 3812-760

retainer 3662-337

top O 3855-741

lower O 3855-751(find your own)

circlip 3528-310
Fantastic help and all he asks is charity donation :D
DON'T alter adjustment screw or large spring to axle..undo two axle bolts to take of tension then remove valve.
Drill pivot pin, hold tension vice/valve spring compressor..knock out carefully, nylon bush inside.
remove boot/remains of, circlip to come out. then to remove plunger tons wd and tap downwards gently to loosen, prise up and out with open end spanner...minimum damage..
spend 1/2 a week cleaning then refit with new seals..had to make some conical tool out of pen to get plunger seal in without damage...sorry don't have pics...biggest nightmare was finding plunger seal..unique to lockheed.
finally get mot and raise glass to another 25 years motoring
