Subaru EJ20: has anyone thought of this?

Postby FordMk1Transit » Sat Apr 22, 2017 11:33 am

Hi all

This is not a conversion I plan on doing myself, but was wondering if anyone has ever investigated fitting the EJ20 - 4 cilinder Subaru boxer engine into a Mk1 or Mk2 Transit? It's reasonably short, so might fit into a normal Mk1 nose.

I have one here (a 2.0 liter JDM Turbo engine, 300hp+, bit over the top but they come as NA engines too); Took some quick measurenents, length-wise it seems to fit (only just) but width might be too wide, difficult to say, depends on how low the engine will sit.

The Subary 5speed gearbox could be used too I would say, giving an overdrive gear. Further pro's: modern engine giving good fuel consumtion and can run on unleaded fuel. Programmable ECU can be used for further tweaking.

A cheap accident/donor car could be sourced, so you have all the parts.

Anyone? Crazy idea?

single cam and alot can be done "in situ"
twin cam is a bit more challanging.

Transit was used as a workbench (engine went back in the car)
