valve stem oil seals - mk5

Postby crystalvoyager » Tue Apr 25, 2017 10:52 pm

Hi folks, can anyone give me a heads up about replacing the valve stem oil seals on the mk5? Any things to watch out for. Not looking forward to it but got to be done i think

Why?

Somewhere in the dim and distant past I recall it being possible to hold the valve up with the piston whilst changing the stem oil seals. Cam belt off and piston at TDC. Someone?
There is a tool to do the Pinto, had mine done, maybe just an old man being confused.

we used to use a petrol (pinto) valve spring remover. You dismantle the rocker shaft & lever under it with the tool. Are you sure the seals are knackered ?

its a n/a. i keep the filters and oil clean. everything else seems ok. just a plume of smoke on cold star.
I've had a look at that post yeah thanks, most of the photos are missing so i can't get a handle on what the special tool looks like.
so if i set the timing at tdc i can do cylinders 1 and 4 then turn the pulley so the mark has travelled 180 deg and the i can do 2 and 3? is that right.
if i saw what the tool looked like i could probably make it.

Since that earlier thread,I now have the genuine special tool for doing the seals in situ,I'll get you some pics and dimensions,or if need be I'll lend it you to do the job.
If your is N/A is it the 70ps or 76ps 'banana' engine ?
What year van ?
