MK5 2.4 di running issues

Postby ellabbs » Thu Apr 27, 2017 4:41 pm

hiya guys,
my 2.4 di 1998 tipper has started acting up lately.

when i put my foot down it starts accelerating then cuts out for a millisecond, then accelerates again, and just today its doing it quite a bit more.

earlier i parked it front end up on a hill and it was a right biatch to get going, i had to crank it over in gear and get it on the level and eventually it started..

these may be related or totally seperate faults... i did have a feed pipe to the pump wear thru where it was catching a steel pipe and that caused really bad starting but that was sorted.

im more concerned about the cutting out while im accelerating..

oh and also the water system doesnt pressureize and im losing a bit of water altho nothings leaking, i guess its leaking on the head gasket so ive got a head gasket to change along with a timing belt... the cutting out i think is nothing to do with the head,,, but im no diesel guru..

any advice will be greatly appreciated

regards

andy

Look for leaks around the diesel filter, the leak off pipes from the injectors are prone to splitting and letting the diesel back to tank hence the hard to start when left facing uphill.
It also may be the lift pump on the side of the engine but apparently the Bosch pump will lift diesel but mine on 2 occasions conked out and wouldn't restart until I replaced the lift pump
The little hesitation is most likely air getting into the diesel pipe and then picks up again when it's got another squirt of diesel
But like I said I'd be looking for leaks in the diesel pipes from the tank up and the return to the tank

Parked on a hill.

How much fuel was in it?

As said check for leaks and the leak off pipes.

Lift pump check = pipe on outlet side into a see through bottle and turn the engine over.
See how much fuel has been pumped.

If there's not much, before changing the pump
blow all fuel pipes through with a compressor (clear any blockages )

If it's still the same it's 99% lift pump.

Blocked fuel filter (when was it changed)
are you running on shell/esso etc.
supermarket derv.
veg oil.
or a combination of the above.

coolant loss.
Could be the heater hose above the exhaust has a small hole from chaffing.
water leaks and drips on manifold and evaporates leaving no trace.

Before doing the head gasket Do check for leaks.
Spending a few quid on a sniff test will tell you if it's HGF.

not pressurising doesn't normally happen with HGF.
the system would normally over pressurise (hoses rock hard)

hi guys
thanks for the replies so far , the fuel tank was 3/4 full and i generally use tesco/morrisons fuel, never used cooking oil or other dodgey stuff.

fuel filter is about 18 month old.

very peculiar thing happend when i was trying to fire it up the other day... the top water hose to the rad got sucked flat, i undid the pressure cap on the bottle and i audibly heard it suck air in and hose returned to normal.... whats going on there then..?

regards
