Broken rear exhaust pipe on Ford Transit of 87 ...

Postby Amgoun » Tue May 02, 2017 8:41 am

Hello people.
It is in desperation that I come to ask for help on this forum.
On my Ford Transit 87, the rear exhaust tube, split, last weekend, to the point of coming off soon ... I attach a photo of the identification plate, and another showing The break itself! This part is not a Ford catalog from my dealer. The wheelbase between the two axles is 3020.
Of course, repairing by brazing is always possible, but I still prefer to change for new!
I thank you in advance for the help you can bring me. And that will allow me to keep for a long time this magnificent van that I own for many years and which is perfectly suited to the 70 years old senior that I am.
Cordially.
Francis

You can probably get a new pipe online, for instance here:
https://www.bestpartstore.co.uk/ford/tr ... aust-pipes
Seems like you have a 2.5 D engine.

I admid, great work, would do the same if no new parts where availeble. :D

If I can buy the part new, been 69 years old, I would have changed it, now as I am still fit to work on the van!
Just as the Van, getting older and condition of both is detoriating.

As I look at the pictures, my idee, this pipe was not rusted away, the crack was due to metal fatigue. 8)
Probably coased bij vibration. By changing the exhaust layout, there is a great risk to put in more vibration, probably to crack somewhere else.

The van is in great shape, certainly if it had been a lifetime in the (wet) Ardennes. :D :D :D

Hello.
Indeed, this pipe was not rusty. The problem was created by the strong vibrations of the engine when it is cold. At that moment the engine exhaust system is very shaken, especially in winter when it is very cold. I am trying to keep some acceleration until getting an acceptable idle, but it is not always possible. The most important was to hang the two pots well, with the original rubber in perfect condition. What I have done. The final welded and sleeved pipe will not move and it is suspended correctly with this piece cut in a motorcycle tire ... The whole is correctly suspended and should thus hold for years.
