Diesel scrappage...

Postby cherry1809 » Fri May 05, 2017 5:35 pm

So no, I won't be scrapping the van.
But I will be fitting a Saab B204.
Probably the wrong forum to ask on but any ideas on what box to use?

2.0 turbo used in the early Saab 93.
Strong engines. I took one apart last weekend with over 200k on it, and there was absolutely no wear in the bores at all.

I'm with gotcoalman on that one. I think mating gearbox and engine from different manufacturers would be ... challenging :D Not to say it couldn't be done but ... good luck! :D

Mating the lot to the existing propshaft would be far easier :)

Aren't Saabs fwd?,read articles in past where the lumps been fitted into Vectas, mates up with Vauxhall gearbox, seen Mk2 escorts with vauxhall redtops in,wouldn't that be the adaptor you'd need?

Can use an Omega gearbox.
Looking on the net (should have done that first) can get adaptor plates for Ford Boxes too!

regardless of wether it was fwd in the saab the engine can be

mounted either transverse or longitudinal in the new "hybrid" vehicle.

the engine isn't fussy which wheels it's going to drive.

not sure what power the B204 made.
just make sure your choice of gearbox will handle it with some head room.

Besides the pinto, is there a petrol engine without electronics suitable for the Mk5?

Low boost made 150 and APC equipped cars made 185.
Although a very easy "stage 3" map and a few easy bolt ons will make nearer 250-260.

Everything from the mid 80s onwards was electronic ignition and then injection. It's not hard to make a cut down loom on non fancy immobiliser stuff though, there's plenty of bangers run on them.

There are quite a few who can help with the ecu through Saabworx etc.
Either tuning or removing immobilisers etc.
Once you have a loom modified its pretty much plug and play :)

GM R25 or (preferrably) R28 or R30 box out of the Opel/Vauxhal Omega seems the most obvious option. Bolts straight on.
Ford type 9 gearbox with custom Vauxhall XE bellhousing or adaptor plate will fit, but not handle the torque, especially if you decide to tinker with the Saab engine (AND WHO WOULDN'T! ).
Carlton 'box or 1800 manta gearbox (Getrag 240), bolts straight on but will have the same torque issues.
Borg-Warner T5 with custom bellhousing. Will handle the torque, but rather hard to find in Europe.
Getrag 265 out of Jaguar/BMW, dunno 'bout the available bellhousings though.
