fuel pump help please

Just been to do a fuel pump mod on my 97 na 2.5di and found that someone has had a play already asthe cap has a hole in it and has been removed before.
So i removed it and found no markings or paint , decided to give it half a turn anyway but found that the hex screw was wound down to the max- as far as it would go down. now my thinking is where should it be ?? should i back it off a few turns >? leave it where it is ? dunno
