2,5 DI Turbo, Cam Belt snapped

Postby matthias » Thu May 25, 2017 8:49 pm

Hi,

think it`s a bigger disaster, see foto.
IMG_1184.JPG

It happened at low speed (2o miles?) and because I needed to get the car out of that zone, I tried to move the car afterwards by the starter, until it blocked completely (clever?)

Because I`m thinking that the engine is to much damaged, I already planned to swop the engine to another one (see other topic), but thought it`s possibly worth a try to look under the valve cover, and saw these badly bend push rods.

So I took the puh rods out of my 95 High Cube with "banana-engine" to try a repair, but the engine didn`t start and seems to have no compression.

With such a damage, will it be likely that also the valves are bend?
(Unfortunately I don`t have a diesel compression tester).

Thanks!

Matthias

Have a look some times on these you get away with bent rods or a broken rocker

A good battery and starter will spin a Di surprisingly fast, especially if there's no fuel. Take the pushrods out and see if it spins evenly. Compare the heights of the valve stems to see if any are lower and possibly bent.

Thanks for that!

I did that and also checked the heights of the valves, which seemed to be quite ok.
Then I checked the valve clearences, some of them were far out (because I changed them to another set of a Banana-engine), made that good.

Without putting everything together I did a quick check.....and it seems to run ok.

Tomorrow I will know if a was lucky or not.

Thanks so far!

She'll probably be good unless you are really unlucky.
Them pushrods aren't too bad
I bought a scrapper once that had let go at 70mph on the motorway, my best pushrod looked like your worst.
Set of pushrods and a new belt, dropped it into my own van and away she went

Good News!

Never thought, that the engine "survived" that cam belt failure, but it did.

After changing the push rods and adjusting the valves the engine did run again and everything is ok.

Thank you for your advices and giving me hope, otherwise I would have changed the engine to the mentioned spare one!

I owe you a pint........ ;-)

No, EPIC (with the "usual leaking problem", but repaired).
