Mk 5 minibus floor!

Postby transit-town » Fri May 26, 2017 11:15 pm

Hi folks, i have stripped a 99 mk5 of its seats in the back but where the seat brackets were is normal floor but the rest of the floor is coated in some sort of rubber seal which was under the floor mat, question is how do i not know there is rust under it as it's impossible to remove? Cheers.ImageImage

its soundproofing

scraper hot air gun and lots of effort with flap wheels or wire brush in grinder will remove it :D

Agree, hot air gun and a knotted wire brush in grinder will move it once softened.
Health warning!!! The knotted wire brush will go straight thru' jeans, boiler suit and skin.......

would it not be best to look underneath?

slap underseal over any signs of rust so the mot tester cant see it and jobs done.

It's unlikely to have rust under the soundproofing if it's still sound, that stuff sticks like sh*t to a blanket so moisture won't be getting in there.

You're far more likely to get rust starting from the other side of the floor (ie. underneath the van) because the crap they used underneath tends to crack and let the moisture get behind in it.

Personally I'd spend the effort under the van.

Trouble is Shultz won't stop a testers' probe/toffee hammer from finding corrosion.
