P reg transit failed MOT - Worth repairing, advice on costs

Postby jaycey001 » Sat May 27, 2017 12:32 pm

Hi

I have a Transit Minibus that has failed its MOT, its got around 121k on the clock and runs and starts perfectly, even after standing for a few months. Unfortunatly it has failed its MOT, Last year I had a substantial amount of welding done and was hoping it would be ok (ish) this year.

The garage have quoted between £400-500 to have the following work done (which i think is very high so will probably seek out another garage to do the work.

My question though is if we keep the minibus we will then be investing in to it, and will be keeping it long term. I was thinking a good rust converter underneath along with a healthy coat of waxoyl would give me a few more years service but what do you guys thing? Is it worth fixing up and spending the time and money on or should we cut our losses and find something else?

The bus itself is quite solid on the body work front, back doors a bit scabby and front OS arch has a bit of rust but other than that its quite presentable and would need minimal body work... its just the advisory "Vehicle structure in poor condition" that worries me a bit....

I would be great full of your input

Many Thanks
James

Couple of options

spend £500 to keep a van you know to be mechanically sound on the road .
or
use the £500 to go towards another van (buying someone elses problems)

Reason(s) for failure
Nearside front brake binding (3.7.B.1) free pistons/guide pins off
Nearside Front Brake hose ferrule excessively corroded (3.6.B.4e) clean up and apply grease or change the flexi if it is really bad
Exhaust has a major leak of exhaust gases down pipe (7.1.2) check gaskets/get it welded/put new 1 on (they dont last forever)
Vehicle structure excessively corroded within 30cm of towbar mounting rear cross member (6.6.6) in with the £500)
Offside Front Tyre has ply or cords exposed (4.1.D.1b)
Advisory notice item(s)
Headlamp deteriorated but light output not reduced both lenses cloudy (1.7.5a) mild cutting compound sorts these or change for glass ones
Offside Rear Tyre worn close to the legal limit 3mm (4.1.E.2b)
Oil leak () don't they all
Battery loose but not insecure hmmmmm secure it
Front lower cross member corroded in with the £500.
Vehicle structure in poor condition major stuff in with the £500.Cosmetic stuff you can sort yourself

So welding done for £500 (seems really excessive for whats listed IMHO)
Tyres and exhaust are consumables anyway.
brakes/pipe just need TLC.

Option 3: Buy a mig and learn to weld. Sounds like you had a lot of welding done last year, shame to waste it after one year.
A quote of £500+ sounds like they don't want to do it, too much faffing about and all underneath.

so it will cost 500 to get a years mot.

or you can buy another van.... easy spend 2k then find another 500 of similar problems..... and anything much newer will have loads of electrickery to go expensivly wrong.

If it is reliable and running well spending £500 every year would be well worth it.

Haha! That's what I thought of too when I heard 'Are we not men?' :)

I sunk far too much money into welding. £500 is f*** all.

This is a better quality version...
