1998 Transit - Help Please - novice here.

Postby frankieboy231 » Sat Jun 10, 2017 2:07 pm

HI all, I need help with my 1998 LCY150 Lwb Transit (whatever you guys call it) that is carrying my Autosleeper Legend motorhome. Had to abandon our hols due to probs (long story cut short) and come back on a flatbed.
I need to replace both main leads to the new starter as break in red lead (pull it works, no pull - click) and replacing both but can't find amp rating on cable or anywhere. Engine is 2.5 Turbo Diesel.

Anyone know the amp rating plse. If I've got the wrong forum or there's a thread about this plse advise. (I'm new here)

Thanx.

Off to the breakers armed with suitable spanners. Double check the battery clamps for corrosion.

Hi Vanfox - for the cost I'd prefer to put new ones on, simple job, just need to know amperage needed.

You can buy crimp on lugs and super flexible welding earth cable cheap, (much cheaper than battery cable and more flexible) I used 70mm sq as bigger never hurt anything but I beleive 40mm sq is fine.
40mm sq is rated about 300 amp
70mm sq is about 700

Thanx DodgeRover. My intention is to do what you say using heavy duty jump leads as awkward length (4 ft), then I get the right colours. Just needed the amps to get correct mm sq. Looks like you've answered it - bigger the better (as long as it fits in the lugs). Thanks to all.

Welding cable is cheaper than jump leads - just buy it in one colour then put coloured heat shrink tubing over it.
Check and clean or replace all the earth straps while you are at it.
