VV carb

Postby dajome » Sun Jun 18, 2017 6:35 pm

I have a 1986 mk3 with pinto 2ltr auto engine (3 speed) and the much maligned VV carb with auto choke. It was working fine last year but having been left standing for a few months, will not idle. After some messing, it sort of runs but is hunting like crazy at low revs so assume it's the auto choke playing up. Any ideas?

as petrol's gone from bad to worse, my 2p is idle circuit gummed up...like main jet on a lawn mower after winter rest in these 5% + ethanol days...so full clean, not fiddle

I am told Sainsbury's super (and Murco?) is only 1% ethanol, most of the UK...and the 97 is close to 4* pinto really really wants  and change those old petrol hoses btw :(..vv and mk3 was for emissions/lead free but not ethanol/methanol cocktail that you get now most places

Back in the day when we ran a fleet of escort vans and seirra p 100s with the vv carbs if it had a auto choke we would fit a standard Ford manual conversion not the after market one that just replaced the bimetallic strip end plate this sorted out the choke problems. When the carb played up as they always did we'd give them a good clean out fit a genuine main diaphragm and a accelerator diaphragm to sort them out
