Smiley won't pull away properly.....

Postby jimllshiftit » Tue Jun 20, 2017 6:15 pm

My van has started to struggle away from junctions and traffic lights. Hill starts are glacially slow, its top speed seems to have reduced and reduces even more on even the slightest gradient. The van revs fine so long as it is not under any load and once its up to about 10 mph it starts to pull away almost normally.

Its a 97 2.5di 190 which has done 130k and is probably on its original clutch. The clutch biting point has always been quite near to the floor for all of the three years I have had the van. I'm guessing its a clutch problem but I wonder if any of you can recommend a fix or experiment before I start swapping the clutch.

97 Di should have a Bosch?
Is the clutch slipping or hard to get into gear?

When was the fuel filter/air filter last changed?

Biting point for the clutch is manual adjustment.

My money is on a sticking torque sleeve in the pump, (if it is a Bosch) :)

Its a Bosch,

Had some dodgy home made biodiesel in it recently, but I drained the tank and replaced the fuel filter and its been fine for about 1000 miles.

What do you reckon I should do now? Anyone got a Bosch pump for sale?

Search out "torque sleeve" on here, you'll have to look back in time but there's a very good 'how to' on fixing a sticking torque sleeve, so you don't need to replace the pump 8)

It's not too difficult. There is a thread in the bottom of the piston where you can screw in a long roofing bolt (?) to pull the piston and sleeve out if it sticks.

might be worth doing the fuel filter again , your dodgy bio diesel may have loosened some crap in the tank thats come though and gummed up the new filter.
