Thinking of buying Mk4 (1995) camper and need advice

I would not touch this. I bought a Mk5 in a similar state, thinking I could have it welded. I ended up with a heap of spare parts for my MK3 Ambulance, which I had to buy to replace the rotten MK5. The rust you can see is about 30% of what's there, they were almost designed to rust from the inside out. And there is no good metal to weld new plates to.

What on earth are all the bolts through the floor for?

Probably for rails for sliding/removable minibus seats.

It looks like a converted minibus, which itself was converted from a van, so it wouldn't surprise me if all the windows in the back have rust all around bottom and water has pooled in the bottom of the wall cavity.

This on the driver's side...

was caused by water getting in through a badly fitted window. After testing with my (t)rusty transit testing tool (a BIG pozidrive screwdriver) all around I ended up replacing the whole of that part of the window frame on the passenger's side...

The amount of water that had got in through the window seals over the years had settled around the wheel arches and caused this...

which is only the inside, there was more underneath. This can't be repaired without taking out any insulation first.

As above .....by the time you (or your welder) has gone back to solid metal there wont be much of the vehicle left ....old repairs are far far worse than just rusty metal let alone the tins of expanding foam and filler thats been used in that pile .

Do yourself a big big favour and walk away and forget it ....look around for a more solid example ideally just a plain van of a size that suits your needs (saves you paying campervan tax)

and spend a few quid converting it yourself ...it'll be far less painful than that rusty old piece of tat .
